That's crazy. Probably figures it's easier to win in the Pac 12 than in the SEC. Probably figures it’s better to live in LA than Oklahoma….He’s probably right.

I think it’s a genius move for him. Most likely lots more money, more prestigious program, recruiting hotbed, similar conference competition, better weather, no SEC!

We don't go head-to-head with USC. Other schools do. If USC starts winning some of those battles it is now losing, then some of those other schools drop down a notch and go after some guys we want.

Not putting words in your mouth, Henry, but it sounds like you're saying OSU is a "fall-back program" for talent. "If I can't get this...I'll take that...If I can't get that......" and so on.

If a done deal I'm with him... OK in the SEC will typically be 2-3 loss team in secondary bowls. USC and Pac12 offers him an opportunity to build a Pac12 power and maybe soon be in the CFP picture, especially in the expanded version. Plus, he has recruiting chops and can make big inroads to Cali kids. Bad news for OSU fans. SC with a talented recruiter and coach is not good! I don't THINK this will impact OSU recruiting at all. Very seldom do we go "head to head" with u$c for recruits. DO we? The POSITIVE impact of allowing only 85 scholarships STILL limits programs like $c from a "players monopoly," and benefits programs like ours. Will they be better coached? Probably, at least on the offensive side of the ball, but even when they aren't well-coached, they still garner their share of talent. South central L.A. "ain't" everybody's cup o' tea. Neither is Corvallis, I know, but I trust coach Smith to use HIS personal life experience to alleviate some fears "big city, bright lights" kids may have of "Mayberry." It's not a recruiting only bad news. SC with a well known, high quality coach, will attract high quality assistants, and 85 schollies doesn't take into account high quality players willing to walk on there vs take a schollie at a perceived "lesser" school. But, my point is basically a hugely talented SC with a good coaching staff may bode well for the Pac12, not so much for having to play them. For all the fan talk about its great to play in a tough conference OSU will suffer if SC, UW, ASU all land high quality HC/staffs. There's really not that many 5*/4* kids to go around nationally. But, when the upper 3* types are also suddenly enamored with LA, Seattle, etc it's not a good thing. Going 3-0 in NC will almost become a must with certain conference rotations.

How many “high quality” kids can afford to walk on at USC to maybe, possibly play vs getting a scholarship else where?

How many “high quality” kids can afford to walk on at USC to maybe, possibly play vs getting a scholarship else where? You don't know kids/athletes very well if you think LA, SC, SC football won't allow them to make that decision. Preferred walk ons are not on on schollie, but on a "roster" and key components to a team's roster and first in line when a schollie opens. Plus they do get benefits other than tuition and R&B... gear, Cost of Attendance stipends, typically laptops for team meetings (used for academics too). Some schools have been looking into how to use the NIL rules to also help (should be total BS to do that, but... are there really any real enforcement of the new NLI "rules"?). I believe the average roster of D1 football teams was 118 in 2019. That's 33 walk ons per team. Depending on the school that's 33 pretty talented players per 130 D1 teams who may have given up some type of scholarship $ at a lower tier school. Happens all the time. Ask JJ Watt, Clay Matthews (was on schollie, left to walk on), Jordie Nelson, Hunter Renfrow, etc... I'm betting OSU has at least a dozen+ in that category.

Even with an 8-team expanded playoff, the Pac-12 would be unlikely to get a team in this year. Overall it's a bad thing for the conference in general to have USC be mediocre, especially with nobody else carrying that banner. Happy to see them get a hire that a lot of the sports world assumed would be drawn to LSU.

I don't understand how any admin or coach would think 12 is the way to go with top 4 getting byes/resting while 5-12 beat each other up??

Probably figures it’s better to live in LA than Oklahoma….He’s probably right. I've been to both places recently and would pick Oklahoma over California every time.

Smart Coach - staying one step ahead of the posse.
One down year at Okie U. and the Wolves are circling.
Down years have become part of USC's culture.
