The DC shouldn't be hired just based on familiarity. I think Bray is a very good candidate but also think Smith would be foolish to not test the waters. This is too important of hire to strike out on. Defense has been holding this team back since before this staff got here. Remember Bray has never been a DC before so you don't know what you'll get. Smith should interview plenty of guys including Bray with an open mind and then decide. What's Rocky Long up to these days? Being a 71 year old DC that just lead New Mexico to the #86 overall scoring defense in the nation, 20 spots behind Oregon State.

When has loyalty in business ever been a thing? Loyalty has always been a one way street... the workers are expected to be loyal to the business, but management has no obligation to show it back. You are, at absolutely all times, expendable. One should never forget that. In fact, when times get lean, it is usually the longest tenured (and highest paid) people they target, if they can. I hate to be a cynic, but there is and only ever will be, what the business wants and needs. No different in College football. We see it over and over again, it is a what have you done for me lately business and gets worse by the year. If Smith slips up and only wins say 5 games next year half of the fan base will want him fired. Nobody will care he is an alumni, what he did as a player and his path to date. They won't care if he turned down other opportunities to stay here, if he doesn't do better than this year, next year, no small number of people will want to show him the door. To demand a coach show loyalty to a program is selfish and unrealistic when the business, nor the fans themselves, does not value or show loyalty either. I think this is more of a generational thing. Those of us who are Gen X and later never experienced the kind of lifetime careers at a single company the way our parents did, and I think it changes how we perceive loyalty and what is expected of employees. I also think fans are more fickle now in general than they were in times past. Part of that for sure is going to be the multitude of entertainment options that are available to people now versus even the mid-1990's, let alone the 70's and 80's.. fewer options, being forced to read about your beloved Beavers in the newspaper, or at most to scour the emails from the go beavs listserv for insider info. Having to do the work made you fervent. SIMPLER TIMES *shakes cane at kids from porch* It is absolutely a generational thing. and I hate to be the one that has to point out the generation that demands loyalty is the generation that ruined loyalty by routinely abusing it for their own gain. So, you know, there is that. There was a time when a loyalty to a job was a two way street. Then the people that got that luxury of lifetime jobs became the executives that gutted the system, stopped giving raises, killed pensions, busted unions and fought regulations all while telling the workers they were oppressing to stay loyal. So, there is absolutely a reason why loyalty is dead among the younger generation...starting right about where you said it, OA... us Gen X'ers.

I just want to see a defense with true edge rushers. Beavers usually pack the 3 down guys between the OTs without an LB as an edge rusher. Zero pressure. I don’t care if the Beavers have 2 or 3 or 4 down, I want to see edge rushers.

I would hope we get someone who can recruit. We need to recruit the islands. Utah does and those guys are big and fast. Either that or get some 4 star or high level transfers. Serious gap still for us. Congrats to Utah for showing the world how football should be played. Not so much glitzy uniforms . Not so much Nike corruption. Hoping Addidas steals Cristibol in a missing contest. Just think how much that will help usc.

I don’t have a clue on the outcome, but I would like to see Utah against any team in the country right now. Rose Bowl will be a good indicator anyway. Utah may not have the overall speed of the big 4, but it would be interesting.

Bronco Mendenhall is available? No. His 1996 defense under Pertinone was atrocious.

Plus, the way it appears, seeing tOSU get beat by (2) Pac12 teams (even if one was ucks) to bookend their season would be a wonderful addition to they and Clemson not in CFP. *effing bullpups choking to have 3 "regulars" out still irks me.

His 1996 defense under Pertinone was atrocious. You should have seen his UVA defense in Provo last month. Good lord it was awful. 734 Yards. 8.8 Yards Per Play.
