I know that Niner and Coach Bray are already planning how to get the right players in the right places. Focus on the bowl game then go to work on the recruiting trail and transfer portal. An entire offseason with Coach Bray at the DC position will make a world of difference in my opinion. Yes, I am making assumptions that Niner will hire Bray for the DC position. Why wouldn't he? Already familiar with the players and the head coach and still a great recruiter. Another factor(I haven't seen discussed) is who would they get to backfill Bray's position? -an up-and-comer? -recruiter? -different position coach? -"Old" guy to lend stability? Might have a bearing on who ultimately gets the DC nod.

The DC shouldn't be hired just based on familiarity. I think Bray is a very good candidate but also think Smith would be foolish to not test the waters. This is too important of hire to strike out on. Defense has been holding this team back since before this staff got here. Remember Bray has never been a DC before so you don't know what you'll get. Smith should interview plenty of guys including Bray with an open mind and then decide.

Maybe that just isn't a thing anymore... He left coaching DBs here to go to UW, then U$C, then Louisville, then the other school down the road, then Cal. Lastly... is he looking for a job?/

Said it once and I will say it again, Trent Bray will be OSU's defensive cordinator. If I am wrong I hope he will still be on the staff.

I got to deal with Him and his agent professionally. Sold Him a vehicle 2003. I followed his coaching until he started making lateral moves. When he went to the dark side I quit following him. I realize that loyalty means little . I would prefer he not be at osu. By the way it was an Escalade pick up. Surprised his name came up here.If he did well he could end up in Seattle again.

This may not be a popular question, but why have we not been able to recruit to the defensive line? I mean real solid PAC-12 quality kids. Every year we call it the biggest area of need and virtually every year we strike out. While #90 looks like a good player in the making the rest of that talent pool is pretty anemic. I mean hell, we converted an OL to DT/NG and he was listed as a starter before he ever played a down . Maybe we need a new DL coach who can attract more kids (I know each coach has a geographic area rather than just recruiting to his position group). Example of this is Wozniak our TE Coach, we are arguably deeper at this position than anywhere else on team and our 2 2023 verbals are both TE’s. I always felt Coach Seamolu developed talent when he was here under Riley. I do not see that now. I am all for keeping Bray unless a big talent became available (like a fired HC to the north).

Lastly... is he looking for a job?/ If a guy like Keith is hoping to become a defensive coordinator, and eventually a head coach, then a broad base of experiences under a bunch of well-regarded staffs is the way to do it. Everywhere Keith has gone, has been an opportunity for him to grow. For us fans, a little tough seeing him in Oregon gear but he had no loyalty to them either - it was just another opportunity for Keith to learn and grow as a coach. It was never his dream to career coach a position at Oregon State. I say we take the best guy available and enjoy them as long as they're around. They told us St. Dennis was a mercenary who would leave us, and he did.. but I would never take any of it back for a second. I was in a full skirt and wearing pom-pom's when Riley returned. You can always come back home to Corvallis.

You can always come back home to Corvallis. When has loyalty in business ever been a thing? Loyalty has always been a one way street... the workers are expected to be loyal to the business, but management has no obligation to show it back. You are, at absolutely all times, expendable. One should never forget that. In fact, when times get lean, it is usually the longest tenured (and highest paid) people they target, if they can. I hate to be a cynic, but there is and only ever will be, what the business wants and needs. No different in College football. We see it over and over again, it is a what have you done for me lately business and gets worse by the year. If Smith slips up and only wins say 5 games next year half of the fan base will want him fired. Nobody will care he is an alumni, what he did as a player and his path to date. They won't care if he turned down other opportunities to stay here, if he doesn't do better than this year, next year, no small number of people will want to show him the door. To demand a coach show loyalty to a program is selfish and unrealistic when the business, nor the fans themselves, does not value or show loyalty either.

To demand a coach show loyalty to a program is selfish and unrealistic when the business, nor the fans themselves, does not value or show loyalty either. I think this is more of a generational thing. Those of us who are Gen X and later never experienced the kind of lifetime careers at a single company the way our parents did, and I think it changes how we perceive loyalty and what is expected of employees. I also think fans are more fickle now in general than they were in times past. Part of that for sure is going to be the multitude of entertainment options that are available to people now versus even the mid-1990's, let alone the 70's and 80's.. fewer options, being forced to read about your beloved Beavers in the newspaper, or at most to scour the emails from the go beavs listserv for insider info. Having to do the work made you fervent. SIMPLER TIMES *shakes cane at kids from porch*
