Is is possible that the 'objection' to the former name of the Game to be played on 11/27/2021 has as much to do with the 'militarization' of the event (the word "War"), as it does to the painful realities over which the American Civil War was fought? It is possible, but the bottom line at the time was simply this: "The Civil War" is a name that when used conjures up more than gridiron rivalries - it was a painful part of this nation's history. By applying that name with all its weight to the game, you next have to ask yourself, "Okay, who's acting in the role of the north, and who's acting the south?" While we can just at great length over which team is more deserving each role, the reality is that much of the Civil War (this historical event) is still being played out in our nation's cultural and political spaces.

So every writer, fan, coach and media outlet is using the word "formerly" about the in state game this week. As they are calling it the civil war but they are not calling it the civil war officially because they put the word "formerly" in front of it so it is okay? So the name of this event has not even diminished a bit. I find it amusing.
Example in O-live"
Now we have seven days to look forward to the game "formerly" known as the Civil War.
In Television:
"Big rivalry game this week in the state "formerly" known as the Civil War"
"Tickets are a hot item in the game "formerly" known as the Civil War
People are free to call the game whatever they want. Was anyone confused about that? We can call it the FTd game if we want. The schools have just agreed they’re not going to publicize the games as “Civil War” games. I’m sure they got a lot of push back. Apparently not enough for them to reconsider. Kind of falls along the lines of everyone mask up for a football game and then there is a 20% participation rate. So when the schools say to the state. "see we are masking up" they really do it with a wink and a nod. If it truly was enforced they would have shut down live attendance three games ago.
It is just amusing that the media is just game playing it all. So the schools are just doing this with a nod and a wink too. If they were really serious they would have already renamed it. So in a sense you are right, it is not enough for them to come up with a new name.

Well said. It's the very definition of virtue signaling: thinking you're doing something good, but not actually accomplishing anything meaningful to solve the real issues at hand. Instead it just fosters more divisiveness and animosity, and undermines addressing the real problems of systemic racism in our society as people dig in their heels against the ridiculous implication that this 100-year-old sports rivalry has any kind of connection to the issue of slavery. And even if it was a few former prominent players that made such a connection, it doesn't automatically make their extreme viewpoint the correct one over everybody else. I'm as left-leaning as they come, and the whole thing is just ridiculous bulls%#t.

The real issue is 'civil war' is a term beyond just the American conflict in the 1860s. "A civil war is a war in which parties within the same culture, society, or nationality fight against each other." Which is exactly what this is - Oregonians fighting amongst each other. Nothing more need be read into it. Exactly. I’ve been watching the The Civil War for 50+ years. I don’t believe I, in any instance, believed the game was named after the war between the states. Who decided it was and when was that? Based on what evidence? Was I naive to think it referred to a civil war in a broad sense? I don’t think so since Oregon didn’t participate in the American Civil War. IMO it’s narrow- minded misguided busy-body over-sensitivity, however I’m well aware there’s differing opinions. BTW I don’t think the Super Bowl is “super“ or a “bowl”. It offends me that people think it is. I demand change!

I don't understand the objection to the name the Civil War. Didn't the north winning bring about the emancipation proclamation? Look at the national level. The south won the civil war. Dr. Heather Cox Richardson agrees with me. Okay, I agree with her.

Not unless we want to.

The funny thing is it really doesn’t matter what anyone here thinks, whether it’s virtue signaling, or even if it’s just a snowflake reaction. It doesn’t matter. The two schools have decided that the nickname of the game is no longer appropriate, so it just won’t be used in official ways.
It doesn’t matter what you call it at home. No big deal.

Everybody calls it the Civil War and nobody cares... This thread is exactly the last thing in the universe we need to waste energy on.
