So every writer, fan, coach and media outlet is using the word "formerly" about the in state game this week. As they are calling it the civil war but they are not calling it the civil war officially because they put the word "formerly" in front of it so it is okay? So the name of this event has not even diminished a bit. I find it amusing.
Example in O-live"
Now we have seven days to look forward to the game "formerly" known as the Civil War.
In Television:
"Big rivalry game this week in the state "formerly" known as the Civil War"
"Tickets are a hot item in the game "formerly" known as the Civil War

People are free to call the game whatever they want. Was anyone confused about that? We can call it the FTd game if we want. The schools have just agreed they’re not going to publicize the games as “Civil War” games. I’m sure they got a lot of push back. Apparently not enough for them to reconsider.

I don't understand the objection to the name the Civil War. Didn't the north winning bring about the emancipation proclamation?

I don't understand the objection to the name the Civil War. Didn't the north winning bring about the emancipation proclamation? But wasn’t the South fighting to keep slavery? If so, then what does that mean for the “southern” school in this rivalry?

I don't understand the objection to the name the Civil War. Didn't the north winning bring about the emancipation proclamation? The Proclamation was issued more than 2 years before the end of the Civil War. I suppose the North's victory added to it's 'enforcement'. If the South had won, the Proclamation may have become meaningless. If Johnson hadn't' taken over for the assassinated Lincoln (only 6 days after the Robert E. Lee's surrender), the enforcement of it, and subsequent reconstruction, would have likely progressed differently, as Johnson's loyalties to the South eroded potential progress. Is is possible that the 'objection' to the former name of the Game to be played on 11/27/2021 has as much to do with the 'militarization' of the event (the word "War"), as it does to the painful realities over which the American Civil War was fought?

The real issue is 'civil war' is a term beyond just the American conflict in the 1860s. "A civil war is a war in which parties within the same culture, society, or nationality fight against each other." Which is exactly what this is - Oregonians fighting amongst each other. Nothing more need be read into it.
