That's too bad. I thought 1st/2nd round hosting and the excitement it brought to those sites was good for growing the women's game. Hope it all works out for the best. I agree, Werebeaver. Not having the home game for the Beavs will be a bummer. At least we beat Tennessee at Tennessee before this change! How many teams will be able to say that!!

I also agree that the change is not an improvement.

Not having teams host the first 2 rounds is a terrible decision; therefore, I am not at all surprised that this is what the NCAA will do.
I expect an announcement any day that they will be switching to NFL rules for football overtimes.

With this and NIL they may kill off the last area of enjoyment. It means that the small population centers will lose out. Seems sort of rigged against the more rural teams. And the cost to see a first or second round game in person may be or of reach for a family. This saddens me.

There is NO change to the format of the top 16 teams hosting 1st and 2nd round games. The reference in the article to a change to neutral sites effective 2023 refers to where the new "First Four" games will be played. For a more complete explanation of the First Four as it relates to women's basketball, see this ESPN article. The only impact of this change on the Beavs for this season's tournament is (1) if the Beavs disappoint, there are now 4 extra at-large bids available, or (2) if they play up to their potential and host as a top 16 team, Corvallis may be chosen to host one of these new First Four games a couple of days before the Beavs open (e.g. if Beavs play their first round game on Friday, they may have to hold a First Four game on Wednesday).

I'm sure it's all about saving themselves money - centralize everything to save expenses and have it in the highest bidding city(ies). As Sparty mentioned, "small population centers will lose out...". Edit: Maybe I spoke too soon. Will read over fmpol 's info more closely.

My takeaway was that this change (neutral sites first round games, if it happens) is to address that Women's team in general, and specifically those teams that are lower seeded, do not get the same 'championship' experience that the men's teams do. I can see their point.
If you are Boise St. and you make the tourney, your reward is to go play at Gill or Pauley, for example, rather than at Moda or some other neutral site. In addition, you have to overcome a higher seeded team on their home court in order to advance. I know the past few years have seen some more upsets than usual, but the Women's tournament, especially the first two rounds, doesn't have nearly the upsets that the Men's side does (just from observation, I have not actually looked at the numbers).
I think it is the right thing to do.

They tried neutral sites before and attendance was terrible. Did the NCAA learn their lesson or will they try the same thing again? I understand a team hosting 1st/2nd round games makes the playing field not level, but empty arenas is not really a good look.

Back to other Pac 12 teams, Charisma Osborne is out with an ankle injury for UCLA. I was wrong about last night's game, they had 8 available. First game this season for Horvat. But now no Osborne.
Oregon is going into the big tourney in Bahamas without Paopao, Rogers or Bigby. Sabally's status isn't certain at this point. If they win their first game, will be tough going up against South Carolina w/ so many key players out.

Could this be in response to the “Big Dance” Men’s and Women’s Tourneys need to be equal?

3 games in progress, AZ, Utah & Colorado, only Colorado vs Marquette has a chance to be competitive IMO. pac-12.com/live/cubuffs

Utah got off to a fairly quick start, then just kinda muddled about, didn't play particularly well, still won by 30+. They did play their bench A LOT.
Arizona started slow then just crushed Marist.
It's still early, but Pac 12 is avoiding bad losses. Not only are the projected middle or bottom teams winning, for the most part they are winning by big margins. I'm not really gonna call Texas over Stanford a bad loss.
Shoot, I keep forgetting Arizona St. is only 1-2. Devils are really screwing up the league's OOC record.

That's the only 3 losses the conference has - Texas over Stanford, and whatever teams beat Arizona State.
