In February of 2021, Oregon State published a 2021 Baseball Roster listing the 45 players in the program. Thirty-nine of those players have remaining eligibility and could return for the 2022 season. With an incoming recruiting class of seventeen arriving this summer, the number of eligible players swells to 56 – an unwieldly number for any coaching staff. Coach Canham has expressed a desire to work with a group of 35-40 which would necessitate trimming the group of 56 down by 16-21 players. Some of the trimming will be reduced by a natural course of events.
1. The Beavers could lose several players in the June MLB Draft. RHP Kevin Abel is a possible 3rd-5th round draft pick. C Troy Claunch could be a late selection or free agent signing if he feels ready to turn professional. RHP Jake Pfennigs is draft eligible and was drafted by the Padres out of high school. His ’21 season has boosted his stock and he could be a “sleeper” in the draft. Incoming freshman OF Tyree Reed could be selected in the first 5-8 rounds and be offered additional compensation to sign.
2. We haven’t seen any sign of Richie Mascarenas, who was listed on the ’21 season roster. I’m not sure if he is injured, red-shirted or left the program.
3. Cesar Valero-Sanchez has left the program and is in the transfer portal.
4. Three Seniors have completed their eligibility, Preston Jones, Andy Armstrong and Jake Mulholland have all finished their college baseball careers.
5. Two Red-Shirt Seniors, Joe Casey and Mitch Verburg are eligible to play in 2022 but both have earned their degrees and may choose to move on and begin their careers.
6. The roster through the fall will be fluid and with as many moving parts that are at work, it’s difficult to predict the how and when the cuts will be made.
7. Here’s a list of the 56 players with 2022 eligibility.
