Honest question, not a gripe, because I know there is a lot of knowledge and experience on this board.
Is there a reason for all the walks? It seems like it’s spreading faster than Covid in the bullpen. Is it talent? Coaching? Catcher? Pitch selection?
What gives?

A question about this. In an earlier post or a Parker comment, the BEAVS are letting the catcher call the next pitch selection unlike when Yesky was here. If this is the case, could this be part of the problem with the excessive walks/HBP problems and possibly lapses of defensive catcher capabilities due to added catcher responsibility?

Interesting that UCLA was using Catcher, Coach radio system. As I am old school I am sure people much more up to date with the all the new Metrics might have good idea what is going on with our Pitching. My wild guess is the mental toughness and determination is no longer the primary concern of the Pitching coach.

Mully has always been one step above a complete Junker. Always known for throwing strikes, good breaking ball and getting contact outs. However, when he leaves the ball up he is hammered. We saw that last year. Why he couldn't throw strikes last night is anyone's guess.

Maybe our catcher should stop calling for the HBP ball. That rarely works out.

Last night it was choking, period. Our pitching chokes against good lineups.....it's that simple.
I've said it over and over, but last night was a prime example. Free passes against better teams, they will make u pay for it. We get away with against an LMU, but not against a ucla, quacks, or UCI.
Before this road trip I guessed the team would go about .500 ROS, and I think that will play out. The reality is this team isn't that good.....good enough to make it to a regional, but prolly go 0-2, maybe 1-2, and then home.

If, KA returns to CWS standards, we could have a shot. I don't think this team is mentally tough. Note what the Media Team was saying about MC was teaching these kids to be calm and non emotional. We rarely see emotions out of any of these kids (exception Meckler). Very Pro Ball, ho hum just another day a work. Meanwhile the scrappy teams are showing all kinds of emotion. Huge difference in the Yucks this season. UCLA was all fired up.

I thought Salgado was too emotinal. First time on the big stage for young Bryant. I thought he looked as nervous as a fly on a hot skillet. All the animated movements with the cap, arm sleeves, belt, etc. - I worried about a collapsed lung from all the deep breaths and obvious hyper ventilation.
He proceeded to throw a couple over Claunch's head, a couple 3 feet off the plate, and a couple of one-hop, 55' fastballs before being hooked for walking the only 2 batters he faced.
He wasn't calm, cool and collected - I'd say he might have been a little too jacked up .

That is fine, but he can't let the perceived bad call or misplaced get to him. Jake Thompson, with his great stuff, wasn't a pitcher until the off-season sessions with the pitching coach in Bend changed his mental approach. Lots of similarities between Abel and Jake T.

They looked pretty meek to me until Mulholland couldn't find the strike zone/made some bad pitches in the ninth inning. Did you ever play baseball? If you're gonna get all emotional about one at-bat, one pitch or one error, you're hurting yourself. Baseball is all about the next play, not the last one.

Can we all just agree that baseball is very much a mental game, and the Beavs are not mentally where they need to be right now.

The other "volcano" last night was Washburn. He's a true Freshman, so, chalk it up. Here's a young pitcher whose father was successful MLB-er, including a ring, and who in HS (as a senior), was 12-0 with a 0.11 ERA. But he gives up that game tying hit to a sub .200 hitter. The PAC-12 network did a good job or showing him and Beav P-coach between innings. Washburn was a wreck from what I could observe. And then the balk-off for the loss. The good news: wonderful learning experience for a young pitcher with great stuff. Good things to come. p.s Salgado, by only throwing 9 pitches, should be ready to go.

So they just finished interviewing Pettway the UCLA starter from last night. Very well spoken young man and the interview finished with something very interesting to me. They asked if he gets to shake pitches that are called and he simply laughed and said you guys are funny.
Which brings me back to the revelation we learned earlier this season that Mitch and Dorman allow their pitchers and catchers to decide what pitches they want to call and throw.
Have to say it shocks me that our coaching staff who's livelihood depends on winning and keeping their jobs allows less experienced young men to make such decisions that can be huge on the outcome of these games. And I have shaken my head often this season at pitch selections.
