So they just finished interviewing Pettway the UCLA starter from last night. Very well spoken young man and the interview finished with something very interesting to me. They asked if he gets to shake pitches that are called and he simply laughed and said you guys are funny. Which brings me back to the revelation we learned earlier this season that Mitch and Dorman allow their pitchers and catchers to decide what pitches they want to call and throw. Have to say it shocks me that our coaching staff who's livelihood depends on winning and keeping their jobs allows less experienced young men to make such decisions that can be huge on the outcome of these games. And I have shaken my head often this season at pitch selections. Stupid catchers that call for balls and HBP’s will be the end of us. |

Washburn is a 2nd-year freshman. He's pitched very well. He blew the first guy away on three pitches and was 1-2 on the next guy, looked for sure like it was going to be game over.
But you can't hang a breaking pitch to a lefty hitter. He probably wanted it inside on the hands, and lower, and just missed location.
As far as calling pitches, sometimes the guys in the game have a better feel for what is and isn't working than the guys in the dugout.

Agree Washburn has been very good for us this year and looked good until that mistake. The pitch that got hit for the double was actually a fastball and not terrible location as it was down in the zone but inner half which isn't great for a lefty. I would've thrown his slider in that count since he has one of the best breaking balls on the team

Next season our staff should be very good. Lots of young talent that will hopefully take the next step

Hopefully. A lot of that will depend on who decides to stay for another year. Either leaving via draft or transfer with the new rule in place
