ESPN reseeding article. 4 Pac12 teams left. 4 of the worst reseeded teams left. Only Creighton reseeded at 16 is worse than any PAC 12 team. Looking at the criteria they even espouse to use, how does that happen? Syracuse moves to 8!? Loyola is ranked 5th. What do you all think? A conference slighted? Slotted about correct? No big deal and concentrate on Saturday? It’s gonna be a long week.

To be honest, I’m not sure I’d do the ranking much different. Maybe move some of Pac-12 teams up a spot or two. But as we’ve seen, rankings don’t matter once the teams hit the court. Beavers can beat Loyola.

I find it odd that they credit the run to us “getting hot” but the stats
but the stats say it’s because we are playing really good D. I didn’t realize defenses for hot.

Beavers can beat Loyola. I don't know how anyone that watched USC last night could have them below Arkansas, Oral Roberts, Syracuse, etc.. If they can continue to shoot 3's anywhere near what they did last night, they can beat anyone. Their issue this year is not hitting outside shots which allows teams to pack it in against the Mobley's. I don't really care where we are reseeded.....keep underestimating us... |

Per ESPN's BPI, Oregon State -- a team that had a 7-9 record after its first 16 Pac-12 games -- had a 1-in-820 chance back then to reach the NCAA tournament's second round. The ridiculous 3-point clip that fueled the run to the round of 32 (better than 40% in four straight wins) was in contrast to the program's collective mark of 33% accuracy from beyond the arc during conference play. Against Oklahoma State, the 3-pointers weren't falling (6-for-20), but Ethan Thompson (26 points against Oklahoma State) & Co. held an opponent under 90 points per 100 possessions for the second consecutive game. If you're searching for a logical reason for Oregon State's wins over Tennessee and Oklahoma State, you'll never find one beyond this: a team got hot in the most thrilling run in the field right now."
Seems to me like we are still being considered a fluke. No logical reason for us to be winning. Couldn't possibly be that we actually do have some talent and just needed time to gel. No, we're just the overmatched team that is chucking up miracle 3s on our way to an improbable run. Riiiight.
Meanwhile, the write up on Loyola Chicago is an exercise in tying yourself in a knot to explain their rating because the few losses they have had this year are "good" and their lack of wins against anyone with a pulse can be excused because of Covid. Except for, of course, Illinois. None of our wins can possibly match beating Illinois. They are just that good. (This is insane - Jay Bilas was on post game show yesterday talking about how the B1G is still the best conference and that people shouldn't jump to conclusions. They just beat each other up all year. If you are paying attention at all you'll notice that Pac-12 doesn't get that kind of leeway. Ever. Not even when we are WINNING!)
Whatever. How about we just pound the rock inside all game and barely take a 3 against Loyola? Heads would literally explode at ESPiN.

Suddenly Oral Roberts is best than all of the Pac 12 teams? Gimme a break. Like I said in another post somewhere, the Pac 12's reputation is what it is and wins by uo won't help. It's why I never root for them. |

In my mind, a reseeding is different than a power ranking. A reseeding should have consideration for the structure of the actual tournament at hand. I can see how it can be defined as a simple ranking, and that’s fine. Either way, objectively, either USC or Oregon will be one of the top 8 teams in the country, so I personally would have put one of them in that range. |

Here's another power ranking/seeding thing... This list seems more practical to me as well, although what FSU did to UC was pretty impressive. It's all about matchups though at the end of the day. As for Loyola, they have losses to Wisc (NET 27), Richmond (NET 68), Indiana State (NET 120) and DRAKE (NET 45). Southern Illinois took them to OT in one game (RPI 214), and that was in late Feb. Since Jan 1, they've scored more than 70 in 7 out of 20 games. Against a very good defensive team in North Texas, they won 57-49. Bottom line, they are a very good defensive team, but they also have to be - they are not built to outscore teams. They haven't really put away very many teams even those deep in quad 4 - and when they did, the other time they played that team was often close:https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/team/schedule/_/id/2350 Bottom line, there was no reason to think this team was under-seeded. They beat Georgia Tech after their ACC POY who led the team in points, rebounds and blocks ... probably impacted GT a bit. They were a team really rolling, and they did not look good without Wright. Illinois was clearly a surprise, but given how poorly the B1G has played overall in this tournament, you have to wonder how much they also caught the disease. I'm not saying Loyala Chicago is not a good team at all, they are very good. I'm just saying their resume isn't really significantly better than OSU's - they at least kept out of the Quad 4 loss column, but came awfully close. And sorry, but their recent run of Southern Illinois, Indiana State, Drake, a wounded GT, and Illinois is not similar to UCLA, Oregon, Colorado, Tenn and OkState. I expect a good game, and we very well could lose. But I also will not be surprised if they struggle mightily to score on us, and our bigs go to town on their interior defense. Krutwig is very consistent at scoring, yet has never gone over 22 on the season. I like our chances if we can hold him to his usual without allowing him to set up his teammates. He's the only guy averaging over double-digits, but they consistently get a lot of people involved in their scoring. We will have to defend everybody well.
