BYU competes in the West Coast Conference and is predicted to finish 3rd, 4th and 5th in 2021 by the three major polling networks. Pepperdine and U San Diego are the WCC favorites this year. The Cougars are coached by Mike Littlewood who is 224-171 in his BYU tenure.

The Cougars return 26 players, including 6 position players from their 7-9 2020 team. The 2020 team had some signature wins beating Gonzaga 7-1, and Oregon State 4-3 in Surprise, then taking a series from Cal Poly-SLO. Scouting reports indicate some veteran leadership and pitching will be their strength in 2021.

BYU comes to Corvallis with a 3-5 record for 2021. They split a 4 game series with Texas State in San Marcos, winning 9-4 and 7-6, and losing 5-4 and 11-6. They dropped 3 out of 4 in Austin against Texas, losing 11-1, 12-6, 3-1 and winning 5-4

TEAM OFFENSE
At the plate in 8 games, BYU is 56-263 and a .209 team BA. They have scored 39 runs (4.87/gm). They have recorded 21 XB Hits with 16 doubles, 1 triple, and 4 home runs. They have drawn 41 BB with 7 hit batsmen and 67 strikeouts. . In 2021, they have struck out on 25% of their AB’s. That’s down from the 36.8% K rate in 2020. 1. 2B Andrew Pintar (6-2, 190) 2rd Yr. .367/.486/.467 in ’21 (.286/.364/.339 in ’20). Bat control-contact hitter, walks and is a SB threat.

2. CF Mitch McIntyre (6-2, 185) 4th Yr. .290/.421/.419 in ’21 (.200/.352/.255 in ’20) Hit .291 with 7 HR and 38 RBI in 2019. Also a closer and the Cougar’s best athlete. All WCC first teamer in 2019. Had 25Ks in 55 AB in 2020. Best best stealer in the lineup.

3. 3B Austin Demming (6’, 200) 3rd Yr. .172/.324/.310 in ’21. Led team in RBIs in 2020. Has a high strike out rate – will chase..

4. C Joshua Cowden (6-2, 190) 3rd Yr. .207/.343/..276 in ’21. JC transfer from Salt Lake C.C

C Abraham Valdez (5-11, 185) 3rd Yr. Shares C duties with Cowden. .205/.326/.256 in ’21. Hit .288 in 2019. JC Transfer from SWCC

5. LF Cole Gambill (6-2, 200) 3rd Yr. .148/.314/.370 in ’21. High K rate. JC Transfer from SL CC

6. 1B Freddie Achecar (6-2, 230) 5th Yr. Grad Transfer from Georgetown. .462/ .400/.367 in ’21. Has a hot bat.

7. SS Brock Watkins (6’, 185) 3rd Yr. .259/.300/.333 in ‘21

8. DH Bryan Cal (lReserve IF) (5-8, 170) 4th Yr. No official ABs in ’21. Hit .238 in 2020.

9. RF Hayden Leatham ( 6’, 195) 3rd year.177/.288/.323 in ’21. JC Transfer. From College Southern Idaho. Having K issues.

UTL. Danny Gelalich (6-4, 215) 4th Yr. Hit .328 in 2019. Hit .111 in 2020.

1B/DH Jacob Wilk (6-4, 235) 4th year.167/.256/.389 in ’21 HR threat, has 2 in 2021. JC Transfer from Wharton County CC.

TEAM PITCHING
Cougar pitching has been inconsistent with 4 good games and 4 not so good. They have a 4-5 man starting rotation capability with adequate bullpen support. Cougar pitching is the reason for their high expectations in 2021. In 2021, BYU has a 3-5 record with a .662 ERA. In 68 innings pitched, they have allowed 64 hits, 56 runs (50 earned), and 17 XB Hits. They have issued 37 base on balls and hit 7 batters with 64 strike outs. Their opponents BA is .247 and their WHIP is 1.59.

1. LHP Cy Neilson (6-3, 210) 2nd Yr. 0-3/4.29 in ’21. Sidearm slot, 4 pitch mix with good secondary stuff. Low 90’s FB touches 94. Top prospect in WCC ’22 draft class. Ranked 7th nationally for pitchers in ‘22 draft (Hjerpe is 23rd). BYU’s Friday night guy.

2. RHP Luke Sterner (6-5, 235) 3rd Yr. 0-0/7.11 in ’21. Coming back from Tommy John surgery. Low 90’s FB and will touch 95. Top-10 draft prospect out of WCC.

3. RHP Bryce Robison (6-1, 175) 2nd Yr. 1-1/7.11 in ’21. A reliever that is starting this year.

4. RHP Easton Walker (5-9, 185) 4th Yr. 1-0/0.84 in ’21. Swingman – Start/Pen. A Bulldog that gets outs.

5. RHP Mikade Johnson (6-6, 205) 2nd year. 0-0/2.16 in ’21. Bullpen guy. FB 93-95 and touches 97. Hampered by command issues.

6. RHP Reid McLaughlin 3rd Yr. (5-11, 175) 1-0/0.00 in’21. FB 88-92 with wipe-out slider. Go-to guy in the bullpen.

7. RHP Boston Maebus (6-2, 205) 1st Yr. 0-2/14.54

8. RHP Carter Smith (6-3, 210) 3rd yr. 0-0/2.84

The other teams they played, ranked and unranked, didn't seem to have problems scoring any touchdowns uh I mean "scratching out runs" against them.

We had some pretty weak swings and misses all night. The Best AB's , I thought, were Mecler and Melton ( every AB ).!
I think Claunch had a couple of good swings , , Ober connected once, and other than that - our lack of offense was pretty glaring !
Pitching came through though .
Whoever said it earlier , the PAC 12 is really going to tell the story !

After watching most of the games I have been thinking this team could be really special. The Pitching to date has been great. This team is going to have real problems if they can't find a way to at least make contact with based loaded. Sure watched a lot of that K crap last year. Was last night an off night or the norm. Ummmmm

If this continues, then yes, it's a problem. Otherwise it's a pretty normal thing in a long season of baseball, nothing more than a one-off.

It's a long season - so far we have scored 2, 14, 20, 5, 4, 3, 9, 4, 1 - an average of 6.89 runs per game. And we are 8-1. If we keep up an average of 6+, we ought to win a lot more than we lose, even if a few of those wins are 1-0, and we win it in the 8th or 9th inning.
