Let's not forget that Stanford is one of the best teams in the country and that they have been able to consistently practice and play this season. This was our first game back from a two week break, I have no idea if all of the players were able to practice this time around. We know that the first time they were having trouble getting enough players to scrimmage. I don't want to rain on some of yours parade but if the lady beavs practiced the same amount of time as Stanford the outcome would be pretty much the same. If we're looking for excuses, keep in mind that until about a week ago Stanford had spent their ENTIRE season playing away from home. They've gotten in more games than the Beavs, but they've faced major distractions and obstacles of their own.

My observations on this are: 1. We need a true PG that is fast and quick Ari McDonald type. 2. Screens are poorly set and even worst used by dribbler I am far from sold on Petrovic. She is just too slow. Nobody named Petrovic is on this roster.

Well, that's why I'm not sold on her!

If the Beav's aren't "athletic" enough then why did they get more blocks on Stanford than anyone else did this season? They just gassed out in the fourth. But they really need to do something about defending the 3 line. Jerome hit 4/5 from the three, and that triples the total number of 3's for her entire season. Her typical game is 0/1. To some extent the Beav's are just snake bite this season.

Rueck's pick-and-roll defense is predicated on the big sagging in the middle and forcing a tough mid-range shot while the guard goes over the screen.
It has been exposed this year against Stanford and Utah. Stanford used Jerome to pick-and-pop, and she converted all of her threes, while Utah's Brynna Maxwell simply had no issue shooting those threes and long two pointers off the bounce. Hopefully that'll improve, as we're generally a sound defensive squad.
While Kennedy isn't as good of a three point shooter as Mack or Corosdale (at least from what she showed us last year), she is a better rebounder, defender, and shot blocker. I think the four and five spots will become interesting next year. Regardless, we need more production from that four position.

It is not just two players. Something is not right with how they are defending the 3 line. Again, some of it is just snake bite season. I think if you had everyone sit on their butts and gave Jerome the ball for 5 shots she couldn't hit 4 of them again.

Well, that's why I'm not sold on her! I'm not sold on Him! And give Drazan Petrovic a break, he's been deceased since 1993 so anyone in that situation would lose a step or two.

One more nit to pick...but I watched Taylor Jones, on more than one occasion, come out to the free throw line, or higher, to set the screen for a dribbling guard, only to have the guard go by her, leaving a foot of space so the trailing defender does not get rubbed off. Then, incredulously, Taylor, turned the wrong way, turning her back to the ball, as she rolled into the key. I can't imagine she is being coached this way, and I find it odd that such an accomplished post player at this level, still turns her back on the ball. Frustrating! Our pick and roll executions really need some work, guards and posts.

I haven't got to watch the team much this year, but did catch most of the Stanford game, and at least in that game the pick and roll execution was pretty poor. Taylor was compensating for the guard not rubbing the defender off by moving her feet to "block" the defender and she was lucky she didn't get called for moving screen on a few of those.

Beaveragain has identified perhaps the biggest factor in how ineffective the Beavs have been in defending this season. Even poor teams (see the box scores for the team's two nonconference games) have been able to shoot well from beyond the arc against Oregon State this season. Closing out quickly and being aware of where the better shooters are on the court have been two areas in which the Beavs have performed dismally this season. That is in sharp contrast to how Rueck's teams have defended the three-pointer in prior seasons. That specific deficiency is likely responsible for half the team's six losses this season.

I think most of our trouble defending the 3 is based on playing a lineup that is not built for modern basketball. Stanford started 4 guards and a big. We started 2 guards, (one of which is a freshman) and 3 bigs. That’s a prescription for having trouble on the perimeter. At this point I think we would be better served long term by starting Savanah or Jaz and having Ellie and Taya just split time at the 4.

A general lack of team quickness, specifically amongst the starters, is certainly limiting OSU's defensive ability to get out and defend the arc.

I've been calling for only one of Corosdale or Mack to be a starter almost all season. With their lack of productivity and some deficiencies that arise from a lineup that doesn't work very well together, it's hard to believe Rueck is sticking with it.
edit--combined for 13 pts and 9 reb/game in about 53 minutes, .411 and .378 FG%.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned is how great was Jones in this game. Actually passed out of triple coverage to someone who scored, made a couple of jump shots. It seems pretty obvious she's the class of the posts for the Pac-12. I wonder if it will be Brinks or Sabally who gets all team?

Oregon just gave Stanford all they could handle but Card pull it out by 2. Stanford used up all their 3's against OSU--they were 6-18 today.
