Obviously Taylor Jones is really struggling. Could those of you who are close observers of the program shed any light on just what is going on?
Is it a physical issue (injury, etc), or a mental issue or both.
The one thing I have noticed is that she is not a good passer (in fact she is a terrible passer) when she is double teamed. Unfortunately unless she improves a great deal in that regard, she is unlikely to reach anywhere near her full potential.
Too bad things are going this way-she seemed to have such great potential.
She appears to be totally lost in the last few games.
I hope you will all set me straight and convince me that I am way off base on my conclusion.

Just my opinion: Jones + Brown equal more than two; Jones alone equals less than one

There are a couple of issues to me. One TJ is not a polish low post scorer yet. She feasts on lobs over the top of the defense when she is being fronted, and dump offs on guards drives. Unfortunately most teams in the PAC 12 have the size to play behind her and not allow that lob, and the drive and dish players from last year are gone. (Mik, Destiny) One thing that will help her low post scoring is getting deeper position. Unfortunately her long legs and high center of gravity make it tough for her to really “back down” a defender. Not being in the OSU weight program for half the off season because of the pandemic I’m sure didn’t help either. She did make a better pass from a double team yesterday so there will be continued growth. Also playing with Talia will help because she has the ability to get the rim and pass. I think Sasha and Savanah will get there. A key point of concern on the board is Aleah “dribbling the clock out” on a possession. This isn’t some plan by Aleah or Scott to drive us crazy, it’s the set of play being initiated by a high pick and roll, and Aleah really struggles setting her defender up to hit the screen, she has to be really deliberate to get the angle of the screen correct. This will lesson I think as we move on this season, because I think the pick and roll initiation will go to Talia as she gets more comfortable. She is much better at setting her defender up in the pick and roll. In summary, Taylor was still leading the conference in field goal percentage and I think blocks going into last nights game. I think folks look at the box score from her big games and think and expect senior year Marie but she’s not there yet. She seems to be a hard worker though, and I expect her to keep improving.

Thanks for your response.

I agree with WBosh. I think the biggest thing is no Pivec and Slocum. Pivec especially was really good at getting driving in and lobbing it up to Jones. That likely made up a large percentage of her points a season ago.
I still feel like she had a more polished post game than she has shown this season. She did make some good moves last year, and aside from the Oregon game this year, I feel like much of that hasn't been on display.

I think that’s largely a function of where she receives the ball on the catch. She’s quite effective if she’s on the block 5-6 feet from the basket, but she’s getting pushed out to 10 feet or so too often. More lower body strength to established deep position is needed. However, as a former long legged post player, I know that it’s a LOT of time and hard work to get that done.

I really like what wbosh15 has posted above about his theories for what has been "ailing" Jones in recent games. I agree with much of that analysis.
I would bet that Jones is plenty frustrated with the limited touches she is receiving on the offensive end in relation to how many screens she is being asked to set for the point guard 19' from the basket. Her ability to pass quickly out of the block needs to improve in order for Aleah and others to feel more comfortable getting Jones the ball with a defender on her back and another defender coming over to help. Jones also needs to roll more efficiently after screening to clear defenders who are now able to further limit Aleah's ability to penetrate.
Jones can be very productive on the offensive end, given the limited touches she receives and the challenges for a 5 having to set numerous high screens in Rueck's offensive system. I have also noted that Jones seems too hurried with her moves in the paint recently as her touches have become far too intermittent.
On the positive side of things, I do notice that she has been limiting her fouls by being more selective as to when she challenges shots.

Minus Brown / Pivec / Slocum....then add Goforth, Corosdale and Mack. Last season, much of the time she was one of two 6' 4"+ players on the court at the same time. This seasons she's the only one. Since Mitrovic is beginning to show a mid-range shot (though based on a very small sample), perhaps we'll see more of Jelena and Jones together. Also, I've yet to see the wicked-good passes Corosdale > Gulich from 2017/18 occur this season Corosdale > Jones. It seems possible that TVO > Jones might become a thing.

I see one problem is that Jones is being asked to do two completely different things this year and she is having a hard time adjusting.
Last year she was almost never asked to set screens. Neither Mitrovic or Jones are naturals at this. Morris and Jo were great at setting screens, whatever their other limitations were they both immobile walls out there. This is not the case for either of our present posts.
Also in general Jones is being pulled off of the basket on offense in order to open up the inside more. This is good for the overall offense, but outside of Jones' comfort zone, and so this is a learning process for her.

Why don't we see more pick and roll plays? I see the screens, but not often do we see the read so that TJ gets the opportunity for the shot.

Thanks to all participants thus far. As always, I am impressed by both the factual and interpretive information that my fellow Benny's house participants bring to the table.

Two things from that video. When we set a screen, the athlete with the ball needs to rub shoulders with the screener. Most of our moving screen calls are because the dribbler is 2 or 3 feet from the screen leaving room for the defender to go over the screen. The screener tries to help by sliding toward the ball resulting in a foul. The other is the screener needs to reverse pivot, opening herself to receive the pass and sealing the defender behind her. Taylor never reverse pivots and gets few passes for a layin. Seem like easy fixes.

In women's basketball the pick and roll is almost always a guard and post. For it to really work they both have to be comfortable taking a jump shot and going for a layup. Currently both of our posts have a decent chance of committing an offensive foul setting the pick. Also the only guard OSU has had that was really good at using a pick was Destiny and she ain't here no more. Jones and Talia should be great at the pick and roll from their offensive skill sets, but they need to learn how to do it. And so far it hasn't been a part of SR's program.
