I'm not sure I've ever seen Beaver baseball fans happy (not necessarily meaning your post specifically) for a road series win vs an inferior type 14-22 team who has been a Pac 12 after thought.
To go 3-3 the last two series is downright terrible... what the two teams a combined 26-44.
Yep a game out of 1st, but 1.5 out of 10th. This is BEAVER baseball, this is not what we expect. Does anyone really see a corner to be turned?
It truly looks like a 3-4 team conference to the tournament. And with this pitching staff does anyone see us having a prayer in a regional? We're 36 games in, we're 8-7 in a down Pac 12 year. The teams/staffs of the recent past would dominate the league of this season.
So, it's a down year. I'd say we're due. Make the most of it, but we'll need a burst to stay above .500 as the pitching issues are not improving. And leaving. Double digits on the bases doesn't help.

I'd say that is a fair assessment, I just don't see our pitching holding up in the long run under pressure, yesterday's effort was lackluster to be generous, 5 or 6 pitchers needed to get through a Ute team that is really not that good. Aside from the run scoring in the first two games, some of our "best" hitters are struggling a bit, two bases loaded situations that I recall, (something like 12 or so left on base) and I didn't see it all, and "nada", even one timely hit in that game and it's a totally different outcome, ya, it's baseball, I know!. I agree there is a corner out there, maybe, but we didn't turn it yet!! I can live with the down year thing, but I can't put my head in the sand and see Omaha either, we'll survive and hopefully be back at full strength next year.

Top 1st bases loaded Nobach(?) drills a line shot down the LF line.....just foul. score 3. Next pitch he GIDP.
inches. That would have put UU away
I missed most of the 2nd game though. 14 LOB? Sounded like we had chances

a good sign we are back on track. Had a good shot at sweeping the Utes.I think we had the bases loaded top of 1 and got nada for our efforts.. Let's hope the corner has been turned.

For the first time in a long time, I'm going to agree with you Heron. Somebody better look outside and check to see if pigs are flying.

would not be surprised to see a change in the weekend rotation. Thompson slides to midweek starter and Fehmel gets a look at a weekend start. Jake has just been too inconsistent, throwing too many pitches. Hope he gets it together, need him in top form if we are going anywhere in the postseason

Last year, Oregon State started 8-7 in conference and should have been off to the Supers but for a loss to four-seed Virginia Commonwealth. In 2007, Oregon State started 7-8 in conference and won a national championship. I find your lack of faith disturbing.1 game out of first, but Oregon State has the tiebreaker over the the conference co-leaders and the series against #3 Arizona (with the conference's highest RPI) in two weekends. Eckert and Heimlich put Oregon State into the winner's bracket. Thompson has six weeks to figure things out to close out the Regional. If not, it will be up to the rest of the staff to close it out on a Monday. At a super regional, it is even easier, as Eckert and Heimlich can punch the Beavers' ticket without needing to trouble Thompson. The College World Series is spread out enough now that a third pitcher will not be needed until the championship series. "Do not be unbelieving but believe."--St. John

"Do not be unbelieving but believe."--St. John You being "disturbed" is a little weird. "Faith", or lack there of, has little to do with athletic outcomes. I'll only say there are so many holes in your apples to oranges comparison I have no idea where to begin. We can start with "should have been off to the Supers..." We lost! To a 4 seed! There is no should have in that. But, comparing the level of play/talent of this year's Pac12 and this Beaver team to the years you mention (or most of the past decade) is pretty comical. It's down year in almost every facet of the game. Winning the Pac 12 could happen... guessing 19-11 might do it. But, going 11-4 for this team is a bit of a stretch. Possible, but it also doesn't change our pitching staff, ineptitude at driving in runners in scoring position, lack of small ball execution, and the inordinate amount of routine plays turned into errors. My guess now is Zona and/or UW finish ahead of us, and 17-13 3rd place is reasonable with a 3 seed. Can we improve? Sure. But, after 36 games the "norm" has been established. To think this team is going to get thru a regional is a little far fetched at this point. Maybe get a few more games over .500 first! Off years happen. We've been very fortunate not to have many lately.

I have zero evidence to back up this feeling, but it seems like the kind of year where we struggle in conference, lower fan expectations, and then route through the regionals and supers to Omaha.
Hope I didn't jinx it. (If you say "hope I didn't jinx", it neutralizes a jinxing. I swear, look it up.)

I would think winning the Pac 12 guarantees a 2 seed and then it depends on what regional you draw and how it plays out. The ONLY thing that gives me a HUGE pause in any post season success... PITCHING. Just no true #1 stud/put him on the mound you can pencil in a "W" type... pen has been inconsistent at best when a guy falters. BUT, the league is not overpowering either, so it could get real interesting.

It took 768 posts, but I finally agree with one from Mr. 1111. lol..I kid...
Agree though - we just don't seem to have the horses in the rotation. Jake's 5.80 ERA and .283 BAA in conference play as our #2/#3 is a problem. Gone are the days of a nearly automatic Moore/Boyd Friday night win, so we have very little margin for error. on the back end, we've gotten nothing out of Hickey this year, Martinek has made a couple of brief cameos, Max has come back to down to earth a bit after a nice start. Just a couple months ago, I was feeling real good about our pitching depth. Not so much anymore. Thankfully Fehmel and Heimlich have stepped up numerous times.
That being said, I will gladly eat some crow if we get hot and finish out strong. I am currently eating crow when it comes to Mr. Donahue. I thought he'd be odd man out this year because I didn't think he could hit.

I think that of the major sports, "faith" does have the most to do with baseball. Whether the term is faith, voodoo, superstition, or anything else. Ever seen a team use rally caps, rally monkeys, or rally ____? Slump busters, favorite stir-ups or sacrifices to Jobu, "faith" of some sort is intimately woven into the fabric of Baseball.
Not having the #1 arm has everything to do with injury. Pitching does not seem to be down from past teams, but the offense seems to be a little ahead. (No, I did not look up the stats, it just seems that way to me) With as young as this team is, I'm hoping for as long of a run as possible to gain some experience and then have a serious shot at it all next year. Baseball is a funny sport. One where the best team does not win as much as other sports.

Baseball is a funny sport. One where the best team does not win as much as other sports. Mmmmm... not sure I would define "faith" in that way, nor do I think it was used in that fashion (original poster can weigh in on that), nor did I respond with that definition in mind. I read it as in having "faith" in the team. Fate happens in athletics, but faith in your team from a fan base has little to do with a team's success. Now, faith in your teammates/yourself as a player has an direct correspondence to successes. Baseball's idiosyncrasies seem to be more widely publicized when it comes to superstitions, but almost all athletes have their own little nuisance/belief systems on pre-game routines, meals, momentum "shifts", etc. But, again to me, "faith" is not synonymous with such things. If you get down to it being superstitious is actually "faith" in an outside force "assisting", not your team. Injury or not, we do not have a true #1. And, losing Drew, who was definitely our #1 by a wide margin in my opinion, not only caused a drop off in talent, but shifted the entire staff dynamics. I would say losing Tweedt early on started that shift, and it's very apparent our pitching stability and performance is down. You can't lose guys like Andrew, Drew, Sam and not have others come forward and "shine" and say anything different. It actually goes toward how good our program really is that we are still 26-10/8-7 when you lose what could have been your league rotation, and then have others drop off or be inconsistent. A lot of programs would love to have this be their down year!

This could be a very dangerous tourney team.
The team has lots of young players who are very skilled. If they play like freshmen, we are 2 and Q, if they play like the prospects the scouts drooled over, then we could be in for a long and fun June.
Lots of position players are in new spots, Hamilton, Donahue, Greiner. Heck that is 1/3 position players who are learning a new position... and trying to play ball at a very high level.
Pitching will only get better, more experience, more time to learn. We are after all missing our #1
In the end, I am an optimist. We will host a regional, we will win it, and go on to the SR where anything can happen.

As soon as we lost Drew, the expectations for this team should have gone way down. Not because Drew is the be-all, end-all of pitching, but because the nature of a pitching staff is that losing one guy causes a slight drop-off at every level. We now have a Friday guy who isn't quite as good as our last one. And now our Sunday guy needs to replace him on Saturdays, but he's not quite as good. And your new Sunday starter used to be pitching midweek games, so now you need a new midweek starter, which means you've lost your best option out of the bullpen.
Losing any regular contributor to your pitching staff to injury can be problematic, but losing your #1 guy can be downright catastrophic to your season (especially when pitching depth was already a concern with this team going into the season).
I'm thrilled with 8-7 so far, and I think taking 2 of 3 on the road against a surging Utes squad is worth celebrating. IMO, anybody who ends up disappointed when we don't make it to Omaha this year is delusional. I mean, yeah, be disappointed that we caught some rough breaks to injury this year, but we can't expect miracles from these kids. But I'm enjoying rooting them on, and I'm enjoying every victory...
GO BEAVS!
