What kinds of offensive and defensive threats should we be looking for from Arizona tonight? Cate Reese and Aari McDonald are the most talked about. What about 6'6" Smith?

After non conference schedule last year, I was curious to see how the Beavs would do on the road in conference. They made the LA trip and handled UCLA fairly well. I think this weekend will be fairly comparable to the LA trip last year. UCLA was good then, but not great. I look at the Arizona schools in the same light. The difference may be in the home court crowd, and how the Ref's and our freshman handle the atmosphere. I don't think it will be easy to come out of this trip with two wins, and if the Beavs do win, I will be curious to see who steps up.
As a side note, I just re-watched last year's UCLA at Oregon State game near the end of last year. Katie Mac and Jo both played big roles in that game and their importance can't be underplayed, and Mik and Aleah had huge games. Destiny barely saw the floor in the second half. Destiny has been much more consistent this year, and is showing better shooting and shot selection. I'm curious to see if she will play under control, and not try to get in a one on one show with McDonald. One thing you can almost certainly count on is Mik playing hard, and with a warrior attitude. I'm a little concerned that the Ref's could take one, or both, of our bigs out of this game, but I also think Maddie may come up big tonight. We'll find out soon enough.

Agree - foul calls and free throws and personal foul numbers will play a big role. I watched the end of the suck men’s game last night. Again, the sucks got some major arena help. The calls in the last few minutes of regular time, and overtime were DEFINITELY In the Sucks favor ! Last shot before overtime was definitely a 3 point free throw opportunity and did not get called . Payton did all he could to throw the game away every time he touched the ball - but, low and behold, the announcers were so busy admiring him - they could not get the play by play right !

Smith is improved from last year and forms a nice tandem with Reese. Not a big scorer but a physical presence. Not sure that Jones has played anybody that big + tall yet (Mompremier from Miami is close).
I've been impressed w/ Fr. Pueyo. Good 3 point shooter, good feel for the game. Stats are fairly modest but I can see her being very good as an upperclassmen. Averaging just under 8 ppg, shooting .457 from behind the arc.

nwhoopfan - - I've watched 3 Arizona games this year and I do agree with you that Smith is considerably improved from last year. She runs the floor much better, and she carries herself with a more athletic demeanour - probably from a year in the weight room....Reese is solid and consistent - not splashy but she gets the job done. Tough and gritty. I like her game. She will be Pac-12 All Conference player before she leaves Tucson.
McDonald, in my view, is the toughest check in the Pac...I'm very interested in how Rueck is going to to D her. Personally, I don't think we have anyone who can handle her in a basic man D.
I think that by the 2nd quarter Coach will turn to his zone D...Arizona's offence works much better off the dribble than the pass (especially McDonald and Thomas) and that's a good reason to throw a zone against them...
This will be a great time for Aleah and Kat to find their 3.....both have had a dry stretch the past several games.....Against Arizona the 3 game is vital because they have quick hands on the defensive end, and if the Beavs try to pound it in the paint with a weak 3 game they will have a lot of turnovers....
At any rate, it should be a great game....The Beavs got a lot of weapons, but so does Arizona. We won last year in overtime and Arizona coulda shoulda won it if McDonald would have delivered in the clutch - which she did not.... GO BEAVS !!

Tonight's road game is a huge test for the Beavs 2 freshman starters. This is NOT USC with their PAC-12 home opener "509" attendance. Crowds in Tucson have been as large as 8,000+ this season, and no doubt the Wildcats PAC 12 home opener vs. a top 5 opponent will bring out the fans. U of A are 7-0 at home this season. I surely agree that Maddie's game will be hugely important tonight.

Thing that worries me in any road game in the pac 12 are the referees. We need our bigs in the game and I think the refs will not call a fair game. We have lots of depth everywhere except post power forward. If anything could be a problem it’s this.

About the only criticism I have of Miks game is she has propensity to pick up her dribble too early sometimes. Frustrating.
Anyone else notice this or is just me?
