..it’s hard to imagine we will ever see a better rebounding guard suiting up for the Beavs after Mikayla graduates. What an athlete. What an example for our talented freshman players.

If I'm not mistaken (and I often am) Pivec is the first 5 Star recruit in OSU WBB recent history. It shows.

I can't remember seeing a better rebounding guard for any team, not just OSU. Maybe Jones and Brown will get more next year without Mik hogging them.  The 2 Fr. are doing fine in that regard though. |

Enjoy these next 3 months Beaver fans. Considering that Mik will likely set the all-time career Beaver record, I’d call her the best rebounder OSU has ever had, at any position. On the women’s side. On the men’s side Mel Counts is still OSU’s all-time rebounding monster. All-time conference record holder with 1375 (2 Walton 1370. 3 Alcindor 1367). Interesting that all 3 compiled those totals in 3 seasons. |

Still? I've seen Mik and Mel in the same room, and I'm pretty sure Mik can outrebound Mel.

Mel Counts, a great player and person. Olympic gold medal and two nba championships. 7 foot tall and could sink long outside shots.
My mom was his elementary school teacher, after he won the gold medal he took it back to his school and let all the kids not just see it but handle it. Mel was playing for the Lakers when my family went to Disneyland, he always told my mom to call him if we were ever in the town he was playing in. So she called him and he had us meet several of his teammates including Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, Happy Harriston, Gail Goodrich and even Wilt Chamberlain while we watched a practice. That evening he took us to dinner. The next day we had tickets waiting for us at the will call window. Court side seats for a game against the Boston Celtics. John Havlicek, JoJo White, and Bill Russell were starters.

Mel attends a lot of our women's basketball games. Don't know how many, but I see him in the hallway or other places 2 or 3 times a year.

So often, when the topic is comparing our athletes to those at Oregon, it seems to boil down to some hype in our favor based mostly on our disdain. For our rival. In this case, I honestly can say that it’s not bias driving my thought that I’d rather have Mik than Sabrina. Ionescu is a tremendous all-around player, quite possibly the best in the country honestly. She is probably a better shooter than Mik with more range and a better passer. Mik is really good at both too. Mik is a better rebounder and defender, but Sabrina is really good on the boards and an adequate defender. Both fill stat sheets, are incredibly tough and competitive, and make their teammates better. Though the Big I gets the triple-double attention (and it’s impressive), Mik is not far behind. The difference is the way that lead, and honestly boils down to character, IMO. Not intending to impugn Sabrina’s character, but she presents as much more self-focused. It showed in the recruiting process and it’s repeatedly reared it’s head with teammates and opposing fans. Michael Jordan was reportedly a massive jerk to teammates in his singular pursuit of personal achievement his teammates indulged him. He was so good that they put up with it and who could argue with the results. If it’s only about winning, Sabrina is no problem. On the other hand, Mik is unbelievably humble and gracious. In the spirit of her coach and our program, she fully embodies the “team-first” ethic, and it’s no act. She’s very bright and engaging, and the way she makes everyone better is by running through brick walls for her coach and teammates. As a hoops fan, I’d be thrilled with either. However, I truly feel that if I had to choose one, we got the best of that deal! |

Mik is a great role model and reflection of the beaver students. Tough, selfless and a class act. We are very lucky to have her.
Senior day is going to be extremely sad.

The 2 Fr. are doing fine in that regard though.
