I'm glad we are not #1. But what is the logic behind UConn being #1 given the schedule played to date? Other mysteries to me are Gonzaga at #17 (should be ranked higher).

I'm glad we are not #1. But what is the logic behind UConn being #1 given the schedule played to date? Simple. They started the season ranked higher, and they won all their games just like we did. It's pretty rare for a team near the top to get passed in the rankings after they win. (It occasionally happens lower down, but not often and usually where the teams were very close, points-wise, beforehand.)
Don't think for a moment that any but a handful of voters actually re-evaluate the teams each week and sort them by rational factors like SoS or MoV. Most voters start with their ballot from the previous week, drop the losers down some number of notches, and turn it in. Some might also drop a team down a notch or two for winning ugly, but not many - some even think that winning a close game is the sign of a "winning mentality", even if the game should never have been close.

All a number one ranking does is put a target on your back.

A number one ranking does put a target on your back - but that is not all it does. Not by a long shot.
Number One ranking means you are, for the moment, rated the best team in the country. Many premiere coaches NEVER attain that ranking; many good quality programs never attain that ranking; thousands of players go thru their entire university careers without ever playing on a team that attains a #1 ranking...Even for a brief period of time....Ask Jonathan Smith what he'd think about getting the football Beavs to a #1 ranking.
Being ranked # 1 is not an end in itself, but it is a great compliment to a team's accomplishments at a given moment in time...OSU WBB, in all its history, has never been ranked # 1 by a major ranking system. To make light of being # 1 shows a serious disrespect for what it takes to attain a #1 ranking - in any sport. Much less Division 1 in the NCAA.... GO BEAVS !!

I think a #1 ranking is good PR for a team, even it is short-lived. It tells perspective recruits...hey that team is pretty good!

Agree reaching #1 is a big deal. OSU fans talk (lament mostly) about the team that the last MBB team reached #1 ranking. It's a label that stands over time, even when it's not applied at the end of the season.
UConn does appear to be hitting their stride, we'll see if they can hang on to it. THey have both Baylor and UO scheduled (at home), and Miss State on the road, so they will be tested.

I think being the National Champion is a bigger deal than a number one raking at some point in the season. So, if I had to choose, I'd pick the NC.

Which is better? Number 1 ranking or National Champs? Just ask the baseball team.

Like February is easier? This is going to be a fight. One off day against a team you should beat could knock you out of contention. I just hope we all have something left for March. Our freshmen bigs are going to be pooped.
