. . . but the rules don't say anything like, "If you miss X games one year and then Y games another . . . " And that's a problem. If they just gave a cut-and-dried criterion and applied it every single time, they could shut us all up. On the other hand, if they gave a cut-and-dried criterion and they applied it every single time, there are coaches out there that would abuse it. If we knew for sure that if Kat sat out, say, 10 games this season, it sure would be easy to say, "Golly, she just isn't ready to play yet . . . " for about ten straight games. Anyone with any sense would recognize that it takes at least a year after an ACL before they are even close to being able to play at their previous level. One thing always important when it comes to laws or rules is keeping them in context with their intended spirit. The point is to keep a player from playing more than four years. That is the intent. The problem is that in todays reality college players are not just playing for college scholarships. To many they are preparing for a post college vocation. The purpose of college is to provide education and training to prepare them for their chosen vocations. When the restrict a player from getting the opportunity to get as much preparation as necessary they are interfering with the intent of those institutions. The programs in many college sports has long ceased to be just a means to an education but is in fact the education that prepares many of them for their chosen careers. When the NCAA interferes with the players ability complete four healthy years they are in fact hindering that players vocational opportunities. There rules are basically set up to be a tool and means to perpetuate their lucrative self serving institution.
