This upcoming season Coach is facing his toughest roster decisions in a long time - maybe his entire career... He's got 11 players who can play in the Pac; 5 of them have proven that they not only can compete, they excel at a high level in the Pac.
The top 5 (as of now) include Pivec and Slocum - both of whom are likely to earn All Pac-12 honors this upcoming year. Both look like they will be among the top WNBA draft picks.
The next 3 (Goodman, Corosdale & Tudor) have all started for the Beavs at one time or another in their OSU career, with Corosdale going into her 3rd year as a starter..She was so impressive as a frosh that she played 40 minutes in a Sweet 16 game. This group of five is a very impressive collection of basketball talent, and it seems to me that there is no way - other than injury - that they won't all see a lot of floor time this year.
The next four players are impressive prospects with high ceilings, but are still untested and unproven at this level. In Taylor Jones, Kennedy Brown, Trish Morris, and Jelena Mitrovic Coach has the tallest and deepest collection of rising stars in the Conference, maybe in the country. People who know what they're talking about agree that Jones & Taylor have the aura of excellence about them and nothing that happened in the practice gym or in Italy is indicating otherwise. Exactly how Jones and Taylor are going to get on the floor, and what positions they are going to play, and who they are going to replace, is far from clear....
If they were the only two that Coach had to bring along that would be one thing - - but he also has two other Bigs of considerable promise. Jelena at 6'8 and Morris at 6'7 are talents that must be nurtured. Whether that means floor time for each of them is anybody's guess. They both have their believers. In her rookie season Morris showed an athleticism unusual for 6'7, and to add to her stock she has good enough hands to distribute the ball when she doesn't shoot it...
Several on this board are Morris believers including myself...She can't carry the team, everyone agrees, but she can help it and probably help a lot.... Coach seems to be high on Jelena after watching her compete in Europe....I'm in the dark on her but her video suggests a player who has the ability to be an improved version of Jo Grymek, probably this year, for sure next.
Now if juggling these 9 players is not enough Coach has three other players in the mix....
Maddie Washington is a senior who started a lot of games last year...To go from a starter to 10th player seems very weird but that might be what Coach is looking at. On the other hand, a case can be made that she knows the system, she passes well, and she has proven experience (she played a key role in the tourney win over Gonzaga)...So, it's possible she might even be a starter when November gets here. If she is, most here believe that she will be replaced by one of the first year players before December.... Janessa Thropay is in her 4th year, she has weathered a ton of injuries and right now looks like a utility player at best on a stacked roster... Jas Simmons is in her 2nd year and has made solid strides after a summer of International ball, and what looked like an impressive series in Italy against weaker competition...
So, Coach is now looking at 11 players who are court worthy....He has his work cut out deciding who can do what best, who can wait and watch best, who can benefit from a redshirt year, and, finally, who will sit.
It's a talent "problem" coach is glad to have, but he is going to go through a lot soul searching and his players a little heartbreak when his decisions take effect.
At least that's how I see it..... GO BEAVS!!

I think there will be real competition for playing time, but the biggest benefit I think will be decreased minutes for Taya. Having another 4 to take the pressure of her having to play 40 minutes a night will be key.
As for the guards, I think Kat's health and Jaz's development will be the two biggest keys. Kat just has an ability that no one else has, her ability to stretch a defense will really help the driving of DS and Mik, as well as give more space for the bigs to operate. Jaz has a speed in the open court that is just so fun to watch if her confidence is what it was in the Italian games. If she shoots like that during a larger sample size, it will be hard to keep her off the floor.
A couple of points I don't think have been mentioned enough as to the Italian games, were the fact the Beavs played some sort of 3/4 pressure for a majority of all the games. Also, it was nice to see we didn't have much problem with the shorter shot clock, and I'm sure that was part of our emphasis on playing fast.

PT sorts itself out! Coaches may have some choices depending in opponents/ situations, but those that get the majority of time will have shown they earned it. The rest, it's their job to make it impossible for the coaches not to play them. Just be ready when their time comes. As it usually does at some point in a season.

"Exactly how Jones and Taylor are going to get on the floor, and what positions they are going to play, and who they are going to replace, is far from clear...." Personally I think their playing on the floor at the same time is almost inevitable. Unless you know something about her the rest of us don't. 😜

Not everyone is going to be happy but it is better than a short bench.

I wouldn't be too terribly concerned about transfers. Maddie and Janessa, who will find it hard to get on the floor, are both seniors. With Pivec and Tudor both leaving after this year also, Simmons should see plenty of plying time her last 2 years. If anybody's going to see the writing on the wall and leave, I would think it would be Trish. Can't envision anybody else bailing at this point.

411500, thanks for bringing up this subject and for your excellent thoughts. It would be nice to know how this will play out, but we will find out soon. I just hope none of the decisions happen because of injuries.

Taya,Pivec and Slocum are all starters. I expect Tudor and Goodman to come off the bench. Either Brown or Jones will start. That leaves a front court starting position open. I'm hoping Andrea is eligible and ready to go as our 5th starter. With a logjam on our roster,I don't expect Thropay to play much.

With respect to Tudor, always best to plan on the NCAA putting the screws to you, so you're prepared when it happens, as it so frequently does. If they give her the 5th year, that would be wonderful, but I don't expect that to happen. If it does, I'll just view it as an unexpected, very pleasant surprise, like getting a graduate transfer of similar ability. If it doesn't happen, I hope she goes out with a bang, and that, much to Werebeaver's dismay, Ron Callan sings, 'California, Here we Come,' as this year's foreign national anthem on senior day. (That can be for Janessa as well.)

I see SR using primarily a 5 player rotation at the 2 guard plus wing positions and 5 players sharing the 4 and 5 positions. Unfortunately, I see very limited court time for Washington and Thropay and virtually nothing for Mannen except in blowout wins. I am assuming Aquino in unavailable.
Guards (positions 1 and 2)- I don't see Tudor getting a ton of minutes (starts out at only 10-15 minutes) during the non-conference schedule, as she will still be in recovery mode and cautiously eased back into Pac-12 level form/shape. I think Simmons will be the primary beneficiary here with significant minutes (5-10), especially if she plays like she did in Italy. Goodman will probably see about 25-30 minutes, at least until Tudor can once again go full throttle. I don't much change in the amount of time Slocum (25-30 minutes) and Pivec (25-35 minutes) play compared to last season.
Wing (3 position) - I think this will be highly shared among Pivec (5-10), Simmons(5-10), and Corosdale (5-10), with maybe Brown getting 5-7 minutes a game if she improves her 3 point shooting and her counterpart on the opposing team has some size too. There might also be a few minutes (and I mean 5 minutes or less) each game for Thropay and/or Washington for defensive and size purposes, but both are limited here because they don't shoot the 3 pointer.
Power forward (4 position) - Like the wing, this position could see a lot of different folks at different times but I expect Corosdale to get the lion's share of minutes here (25-30). Assuming AA sits out a second season, I think the remaining minutes will go mostly to Brown (10-15), followed by a few minutes for Washington, Thropay, and/or Jones.
Post/center (5 position) - This is wide open. It will be shared primarily among Morris, Jones, and Mitrovic, once she has recovered. I give Jones 20-25 minutes, followed by 8-10 minutes for Morris and 8-10 minutes for Mitrovic.
Of course I claim no special expertise, so feel free to tear this apart!

Agree with everything you posited, with the lone exception that I believe Rueck will play Thropay for defense on larger guards, smaller/quicker forwards. Janessa played fast, especially defensively, in Italy. Was quite impressed with Janessa's quick feet, and tenacious defense. Also why I agree with you that Jasmine is going to get plenty of opportunities in the pre-season, and, should Jas play with confidence during pre-season, Jas will also get significant minutes in PAC-12 season.

Sounds like to me we can go out and play very aggressive defense and not worry in the 4th quarter if someone fouls out. Go get'em lady Beav's
