And... AGAIN... the main point of the initial post... the praise (or any poor game) of the play in Italy leading to the extrapolations on how ANY player will perform this season against much better competition is a complete fool's errand. The frosh played better teams in AAU ball. You are so right. No individual, no matter how discerning, is capable of extrapolating from a player's high school days to how they will play in college if in HS they consistently play against inferior competition. For instance, Taylor Jones consistently played against inferior opponents, so scouts have essentially no basis for judging her worth as a college player. They might just a well throw darts at a list of players' names. Yes, "extapolations ... are a fool's errand". I don't think we should ever have scouted Taylor because there was nothing to be learned from watching her games. We should only scout players who play against good competition, since their games are the only ones from which extrapolations might reasonably be drawn with any degree of sureness. You have nailed it, sir. NICE :-)

The prognosis coming out of Italy, along with the video, is blurry. Every member of this team has a role, and some of those roles are up for grabs. I thought PM started showing some promise in games like Cal and uo, and even if she can do that for a 10-15 minutes per game, that will be valuable. SR seems to force the underclassmen to displace the player with more seniority through their play (see MW and Taya, for example). That said, this thread prompted me to go back and research Taylor a little more, as I was admittedly star-struck by KB and her McD status into thinking she would be more likely to contribute early. After researching, I am now in the camp of thinking Taylor may be the most impactful of all the freshmen. Prospects Nation has her as the #2 post and #16 player.....and before you discount that, realize they have probably been better about ranking big time contributors at OSU than other services (i.e. dating back to Wiese, Wiesner, Hamblin etc). Taylor dropped over 50 points on a team (which could be used as evidence of weakness of opposition or teammates, but also indicates someone willing to put the ball up). She had over 2000 points basically without a junior season. The more I read about her, the more I realize she comes in with more of the incoming accolades equivalent our most recent big time contributors than almost *anyone* else (KB or PM included). And in her intro GT article, when she set a goal of FOTY, I thought she was a bit out there when I first read that, but now I think she looked at the situation and thinks she could be playing meaningful minutes soon as well. That said, I actually think we need Jazz Simmons to be most impactful, we need Kat back, and hopefully Noelle can even soak up minutes in any early season blowouts..... Because recently re-watching some of the late season games, it was pretty obvious that our guards had lost a bit of "spring in their step". I think carrying the scoring/defensive load and losing Kat caught up to them (this was pointed out in defense of JG in a different post) - JG was holding down her role pretty well at season's end, the guards were starting to have issues. We need big time scoring (and defense) in the paint, and we need a bit of reinforcing in the back court. What's crazy is I think we will get that. I think Taylor has the ability to displace PM and be the starter, not because PM is a "bust" (no more than Kolbie was her first 3 seasons), but because Taylor is going to be that good. I'm basing it more on Prospects Nation's track record with our "big time" contributors than Italy, though I think game 4 was a bit of a harbinger. I think that makes us a sweet-16 sort of team, like we were last season. Getting Jazz to blow up and/or Kat to come back strong makes this season very, very interesting. Add Jelena to that mix providing meaningful minutes (or get AA on the floor) and we might want to research where the Final Four is...... Let's hope football can distract us sufficiently until we find out, though futball might help as well. Go Beavers!
