OSU needs to SELL Gil in a different way. We’re NOT a Nike-bought 350 million dollar ostentatious office building... we are an authentic Cathedral of Hoops. A precious and rare touchstone to the greatness of the past!!!
Gill Coliseum: one of just five Pre-1950 Cathedrals of Basketball in a P-5 conference: ACC: Duke (Cameron, 1940) PAC-12: OSU (Gill Coliseum, 1949) Cal (Haas Pavilion, 1933) Big 12: Ok. State (Iba Arena, 1933) Big Ten: Minnesota (Williams Arena, 1928) SEC: none
Every damn time we mention Gill it should be in the same sentence as “Cameron Indoor Stadium” and the words “One of the great Cathedrals of Basketball”. Yes, keep upgrading the facility (especially player accommodations and training) but preserve and embrace what makes Gill special!

Don’t broadcasters refer to Gill as “Historical Gill Colosseum “ ad nauseum?

The P.C. police will arrest you if you try to use a religious term to describe our BB arena. Also, tatt court only cost about $225 million to build......for $350 million, they could have put in bowling alleys and a water park.

Thank you Village People! Thank you Dr Naismith. For what? Stealing the idea? Lambert Will invented basketball. You probably think Doubleday invented baseball and the Wright Brothers were the first to fly. Do your research Wherebeav. Don’t believe everything you hear.

This thread.... oh lord..... Go Beavs. meanwhile Gill still looks like crap. It needs more than modernization. It needs to fit in with the rest of the really nice facilities in the sports area and on campus. Were it an academic facility of such high profile it would have been ripped down a long time ago to construct something befitting aims of high achievement, such as you see everywhere else you walk on campus.

I object to your suggestion of demolishing Gill. Imagine if that attitude was rife around the world. Notre Dame, started in 1163, suffered significant fire damage recently. "Rip it down & build something modern & sleek." Tower of Pisa? It's leaning! "Implode it and replace it with a structure similar to the Seattle Space Needle!" Big Ben needed renovation. "Why fix the old bell, just install an electronic noisemaker to imitate the original." Landmarks are precious. They should be celebrated for their historical significance. Maybe Gill has a dated look, but it's been part of the campus since 1949. Leave the outside as is, renovate & update the interior.

Object all you want, Gill isn't Notre Dame, never was, is not a "landmark" for any other reason than that is old. The basketball program isn't a preservation society. It needs to represent the university by winning more than occasionally. As such it needs a facility that represents a "future" to recruits and fans. Renovate and update the interior? Yes Gill needs to be gutted and if the remaining exo-skeleton is partially preserved as a nod to past glories, all for that.

I think west grandstand of Reser is the higher priority. As the old saying goes "nobody likes 50 year old buildings but everyone loves 100 year old buildings". At 70 years old, Gill is in-between.

I think west grandstand of Reser is the higher priority. I walked the whole campus yesterday. Judging by the lot of shiny new crazy nice buildings OS is all about shiny new, EXCEPT for a couple of facilities which just happen to be the facilities for the tent pole sports of the athletic department, which like it or not happen to be the most public face of the univ. Not telling you anything you dont know but the austere drab "look" of Gill and West Side Reser are now more incongruous with the rest of the campus than ever. Please new Pres whomever you are, be a game changer in this area.

If you win 20+ games and are are tourney regular Gill is a "hallowed" basketball mecca. If not it is old and outdated. Cameron is what it is because of wins... otherwise it is pretty much a "dump".
