Just curious, is the cost of keeping the board going related to the number of hits per time period? I suspect also that a lot of the guests are registered members just popping in to read something without an intent to contribute or respond on page. Relative to size of membership, I have noted that there are a relatively low percentage of us "chatty Karls and Kathys" that are responsible for most of the posts. There are no costs -this board is paid for by ads. Ads can be removed if someone contributes to do so. Higher traffic probably means higher quality brands in the ads (maybe), and that's about it. There are $ costs, but they are minimal. For the most part, you are correct about ads supporting the cost. All the revenue goes directly to Pro Boards, Benny's House does not see a penny.

In reply to Glove asking about staying logged on between viewings, either using an original Mac or needing to clear his cache? Me - I am a long time member but infrequent user. I have 3 different devices I have read the message board on but was too lazy to log in on all the devices. So when I felt inclined to post, if I was not on the signed in device, I found it. I think the loss of google optimization will limit this sites growth in gaining new members if the other posters suggestions are correct. If fewer people find the site, then it will be harder for the board to sell ads and then the economics may worsen. Not a big deal, I'll log into all three devices. But this decision by the benevolent seems just so sudden and unusual to the historical freedom of this board. And make no mistake I am grateful that someone took it upon themselves to recreate the old beavercentral or whatever that old board ran by Lucky was. Thanks for the free board and the format and all. Just not sure this decision makes sense in the overall health of the continuation of this board.

Guess I’ll be that guy.
You aren’t a guest if you have to login. Guests are usually a class of user that does not include registered users. So for clarity’s sake, I’d like to see the wording changed.

Take it up with Pro Boards, it’s their terminology. Or anytime you see it just think “non-registered user” or “logged out lurker.”

So how's it working, have we ensnared any new registrees in our trap? 166 new registered users since 4/9 that can now post their thoughts and utilize the full functionality of the boards.

As a business grad from OSU (obviously) I just wanted to chime in about how clueless this change is. Users are going to register and continue to lurk. What makes you think they will post now that they have an account (me included)?
You will greatly limit the viewership for a replacement of a vastly lower number of registered “guests”. The list goes on as many have mentioned the issues above. The number one reason I will probably stop using this site which I enjoy is due to the need to login to lurk. It’s an inconvenience. I understand where you were coming from implementing this move; however the reality is this will never work and is a terrible move.
I guarantee this will be a marker for the decline of the board. You will continue to see your initial “new” users register. But, outside of current active and loyal users the board will slow down. Newcomers to the site are greeted with a “you must register” screen; and why as a new user would I want to spend the time registering for a board I have no idea what the hell the content is?

PS- not a pay site, number of posters do not effect the site's "quality" or viability. I'm pretty sure the posters here can agree or disagree on many things, but the number of people "inconvenienced" by logging in is not of importance... AT ALL. This is a fan message board... it's an EXTREME minority of Beaver fans, the intent was never (ok, "mighty ones" correct me if I'm wrong) to garner some type of huge fan base.
See ya

A question from a first-time poster: I don't mind logging in but I sometimes forget to log out which keeps an open session going, occasionally on 2 devices. Is that OK? Or does The Dictator require active logouts?

Actually it didn’t work on me. Already had an account, nice try buddy. I voice my criticism and you act in jest. If that’s how you want to run things then obviously be my guest (no longer a thing now). Enjoy whatever it is your goal is here; you’ll see I’m right over time.

just one data point. After the baseball game last night i went over to a Sun Devil message board. One poster there mentioned that he was going to check out the board before the series. And left because of the registration. So may lose some fans of opponents views

I sent a direct message before finding this thread. I have no issue with the need to login but the process of logging in is very strange. When I try to access the board directly, I am not asked to sign in but instead redirected to a Proboards screen saying I need to be logged in that has no links on it to allow me to do so. I had to manually go to the Proboards site and then click login in order to login. Then even after I login the provided links to Benny's House given me by Proboards takes me back to the error screen. I had to click on my member name to get access to the board. I cleared my cache and cookies and this did not change.
