What: We just made a change to the Benny's House settings that will require users to have an active forum account and be logged into that account before they will be able to read the content here.
Why: Looking at the online stats we would have only a handful of registered users and 10 times as many guests. I think that requiring membership and log in will encourage those people to be more active.
When: From now on unless we see a drop in activity.

It will hurt search-engine traffic redirects, as posts won't be possible for Google to crawl. I suspect that doesn't drive a ton of traffic anyway (particularly for active threads).
The other impact will be cross-device browsing. I don't bother signing in on some of my mobile devices, so some of that activity might still be from active users.

You'll probably get a spike in membership, followed by an overall drop in readership and traffic. Kinda a tough call.
I know from other teams' boards I follow, or consider following, I'll ignore the "membership only" can read boards and read the boards that allow viewing to all. I'd think a lot of people tend to "lurk" for quite a while before officially joining boards. It'll be interesting to see how it goes.

Just curious, is the cost of keeping the board going related to the number of hits per time period? I suspect also that a lot of the guests are registered members just popping in to read something without an intent to contribute or respond on page. Relative to size of membership, I have noted that there are a relatively low percentage of us "chatty Karls and Kathys" that are responsible for most of the posts.

There are no costs -this board is paid for by ads. Ads can be removed if someone contributes to do so. Higher traffic probably means higher quality brands in the ads (maybe), and that's about it.

Honestly, I am one of those lurkers who posts once in a blue moon, having to register and log in I feel you are going to lose a lot of visitors including myself possibly.

I'm also mostly a lurker but once I registered, I just hit the log in button and I'm there, easy peasy. It makes finding and navigating to new posts simple and fast. No more scrolling through to find where I left off reading. Seems like its well worth the effort to me.
