Ralph Miller's winning percentage is 165th all time... 1-7 tourney record. While the tourney was different then than it is now, he basically never made the equivalent of a sweet 16, let alone final four or championship game. Do you put Ralph Miller in the same league as Jerry Tarkanian? Roy Williams? John Wooden? Coach K? Bill Self? How many coaches do you put ahead of Miller, and at what point do we accept maybe he was just very good? does the tier of "elite" college basketball coaches go 165 steps deep? Is Dana Altman elite? he has both a better overall winning percentage and a better tourney record, and Altman is 142nd in win percentage Hey, he is a GREAT coach. A true legend in Oregon State history. nobody here should besmirch his name. I am not taking a line on the "is he really elite" argument, but I will completely entertain the notion it is debatable. That tourney record... a data point we are holding Tinkle to a VERY high standard on... is a massive albatross around his neck. the 1980, 26-1, #2 in the nation season in particular. IN comparison, Slats Gill "only" had a .604 winning percentage, but mops the floor with Miller on post season performance. Who was better? Gill or Miller? I would argue Gill. multiple final four equivalent finishes. What about 1982? Didn’t we lose to Georgetown in the Sweet 16? And I do t want to hear about any later vacated games, they played it. Losing to the Hoyas and Ewing is certainly no sin either. They were vacated for benefits we paid to players. That is the sin according to the NCAA. You want a cheating program?

Is Dana Altman elite? he has both a better overall winning percentage and a better tourney record, and Altman is 142nd in win percentage Yes, but a bad human being.
Hey, he is a GREAT coach. A true legend in Oregon State history. nobody here should besmirch his name.

IN comparison, Slats Gill "only" had a .604 winning percentage, but mops the floor with Miller on post season performance. It’s not called Miller Colliseum.
Who was better? Gill or Miller? I would argue Gill. multiple final four equivalent finishes. Not being around for Gill I couldn’t have an educated opinion.

Yeah, they lost their next game. They and their shooting shirts were awesome. 😉 Because, those extra 2 16 seeds and 11 seeds are awesome, right? It was a joke dude, calm down. I’m not 1111. Save the hate!

It was a 64 team tourney in 1989 and 1990 (vs. Evansville and Ball St.). So you confirm that there were less teams then, thank you! By the way, Evansville was a pretty good club that year. They lost the next game to eventual Championship game loser Seton Hall. Way to stretch and distort what you said...come on, man! I'd expect more of you!

Way to stretch and distort what you said...come on, man! I'd expect more of you! To repeat, it was a joke. But not the losing to Seton Hall. My apologies. It is possible that the alcohol was getting to me by that point last night. I was drinking Lagunitas IPA, Basil Hayden's Bourbon, and Paulaner Oktoberfest, two of the finest beers I have ever had and, dollar for dollar, the single greatest whiskey in the world. I do believe I let my mind go down the wrong path.
