- Our post defense was terrible. Their post was able to step out and hit the 3, and did so quite effectively making 4 of 5 attempts. 6’8” is not enough to make up for Jo’s inability to close out, and there are games that this is going to be a huge factor. Going to take some time to realize that we won’t have the speed advantage at that position like we almost always did a season ago.
- Slocum does so much for this team. She hit the three effectively. Limited her turnovers tonight (only 2 and 1 was an offensive foul) resulting in a 4.0 ast:t/o ratio. She passes the ball so well and always finds the open girl. I bet Tudor loves having her as a teammate as she seems to be the recipient of many of these finds.
- Pivec has been greatly affected by Slocum playing the 1. It allows her to get out in transition and drive the ball, which she does so effectively. She is so strong and has some really acrobatic finishes! She looks really good after going back to her natural position.
- McWilliams didn’t do much, but she didn’t need to as Slocum, Tudor, and Pivec all had 14-15 pts.
- The two freshman entered the game with about 2 minutes remaining and they don’t look ready to play...yet. Simmons seems very nervous, passive one might say. I hope she can get in a little earlier in a future game if the score is accommodating just to get a little confidence. Morris still has a lot of work to do - but I’m confident she will get there. The question is “when”?
- Aquino was suited up but didn’t enter the game. I feel like she may be the most complete freshman at this point, but that isn’t a fair judgement since she hasnt seen the floor yet - just a gut feeling.

These would be my thoughts:
---The team doesn't play nearly as well together as last year's team.....I believe that will change quickly as they play a few more games together. I think there they still need some adjustment to playing at the speed and pace of Slocum, but it will happen.
---The Beavs are weakest at the center position right now, but I do think Jo has improved, and will obviously help this team throughout the season. I do think Jo MUST contend shots better. She can't allow the opposing player to get the easy shot.
---Despite the usual great rebounding by Pivic, I'm concerned with how well this team will rebound against taller teams. I'm a little concerned about rebounding, but I have confidence in SR's coaching, and improvement that can be made by the entire team.
---I think Pivec may have been the star of the night, and she is obviously poised for a great junior season.
---When this team gets into the heart of the Pac12, the two players who need to be on the court as much as possible need to be Katie Mac and Pivec....well, I better throw Destiny in there as well, but I liked what I saw with the maturity MP and KM have playing together.
---Kat was Kat, and that's what they need from her this year.
---Good game from TC tonight.
---Janassa has a shot at being a contributor this year. If she can continue to improve, it would mean big things for this team.
---Morris didn't see enough action to get any type of read on her.
---Pretty much the same story for Jazz. I do agree with beaverwbb, that she played tenanative in her short time tonight. I think she is more ready to play than the other two freshman, although that may not be fair to AA, since we haven't seen her yet. I'm beginning to believe the rumors that AA will redshirt.
Destiny is fun to watch is almost every way. She's speedy little fireball with loads of talent. It's going to be so exciting watching her with all these 3 point shooters to pass to....and she can hit the threes really well herself.
This team is deep!

All valid points above... the most important being the problems at center. I think it is pretty clear that Scott Rueck is experimenting a lot. I saw Jo on the perimeter often, one time guarding Cal Poly's point guard! Other times being easily driven around. No way that's going to be the norm in the future. I think we're going to be playing a lot of zone when Jo is in the games.

It seemed to me that SR was trying out all sorts of combo's in players, defense, and offense. Saying a whole lot based on this game isn't going to be too useful, but here goes my thoughts.
As I've said before, yes Jo is playing soft at the 5 and I think that's because that's what SR wants her to do. Trish isn't ready, Aquino isn't playing, and the rest are too short/or not ready to play against the good bigs on other teams. He needs Jo not to foul out and so he's making sure she's going to be able to play max time. And if we have to worry about the other teams big's making 3's then it's going to be a really rough year.
The team was much better with Destiny's passing this game. I wonder how much practice they had actually playing with her last season? Was she mostly modeling the teams they were going to play against and not playing as a part of the team that much?
Pivec was doing a much better job with her driving this game. Her usual ball of fire routine.
Kat got to start and didn't fade away after the first couple of misses like she did a few times last season. Kept shooting and started hitting again. She's still working on improving her overall game and it shows.
KtMc didn't do much other than her usual doing everything great sort of stuff.
Thropay messed up a couple times on defense in the beginning, got mad, and did fine the rest of the game.
Aleah did fine, but she was back to over dribbling. Is it a nervous habit or something?
SR seems to be considering going to a more up tempo game with all these capable bodies ready to rock and roll.
Everyone did all right considering they were constantly switching things up so they had a hard time getting a rhythm going.

I did notice Aleah overdribbling. I’m not sure if it’s nerves, she couldn’t fond a gap in the D, or she was just waiting for someone to get open. Her shot was off tonight, which is going to happen.

At the risk of repeating some of the themes, here is the #1 theme:
1. Coach Rueck needs to (will) figure out the 5 position. We need solid defense, rebounding, passing, scoring in that order out of the 5. I was at the game, and it reminded me of the Final 4 game vs UCONN where UCONN punished us for having Ruth in the game at the 5. Cal Poly stayed in the game because JG is unable to defend a post player that can shoot from the free throw line or beyond. JG had 3 rebounds and zero blocks in 19 minutes. That isn't going to cut it. 2. Pivec is going to blossom this year. 1st Team all PAC-12. 3. Thropay is going to get minutes if Rueck cannot get JG, PM, or AA to play OSU defense at the 5. 4. We are loaded with talent at the guard/wing positions. Very impressed. 5. Taya is so good. Gets overlooked, but she will get mega minutes once we are fully in season. 6. The kids that are going to get the most minutes: KT Mac, Pivec, Taya, Destiny, Kat
The Vancouver showcase is going to expose OSU in the post. That tournament may end up hurting our ranking, but, will be a positive by exposing what weaknesses we have to shore up by the time the PAC-12 season begins.

Read through the comments above yours and barely a mention...then look at her line for the game (and flash through you memory cells from last nights steaming coverage)...and it’s apparent that the 3 ‘stars’ for the game were Mik & Destiny & Taya...oops!...and Kat.

Interesting game, the revolving door off the bench was unusual. If we are to run this year fresh legs will be a must. The constant pressure, both offense and defense, wore cal poly down. This is something we will need to keep up to have a successful season.
KtMac, MP, KT, DS, AG, and TC are solid and interchangeable. With these players for the 1-4 there is no real drop off on either end of the court.
MW has improved her game especially on offense but still has a ways to go. Her defense is good and she brings a lot of energy to the game.
JG is still a work in progress. She appeared a little lost at times but was better than last year. She was up against a very good shooting senior post that had the ability to hit the three. In her defense, no one else was able to stop her either. A zone defense is probably the way to go against a player of her ability. Jo missed a few shots that normally would fall, maybe a bit of nerves.
JT was the bright spot of the game. The past couple of years she always seemed to have some kind of injury that held her back. She was never healthy enough to get into groove. While she is a bit short for a 5, she plays a very physical game. Her strength makes up for her lack of height, she can keep opposing players off of their mark. She is also starting to hit her shot. While not a Kolby/Bre turn around yet, she has another year after this one to make that jump. We are going to need her to step up if we are to be successful.
JS and PM didn't see enough time to make an assessment of them. Both are going to need more time to learn the system.
AA is really thin. If she does end up redshirting I hope she is able to put on some weight.
Rueck's system does not lend itself to freshmen making an immediate impact. In the past we needed a few of them to step up early. KtMac, MP, TC and even KT to a certain extent were called upon. As of now it doesn't appear that we will need any of the freshmen to do that.

First I have to say I was only able to view about 1/2 -3/4 of the game watching it being streamed. First a huge PEEVE! After every Beaver score they immediately (or a few seconds later) reshowed the shot twice (from different cameras) while the game was continuing.
As far as the game I saw a small improvement in JO, but not enough for her to be a positive influence in the game. We are in deep "dew dew" if she is going to be our 5. I can't see her competing with PAC 12 Bigs.
I have confidence that SR will get it figured out or you will see a 4 guard offense with a faster pace game.

Mia culpa I missed the second half and just watched the first and second quarters. We shot the ball well in the first quarter from beyond-the-arc that the second quarter was a dud. So they must have picked it up in the last half but against squads like these we need to really work The Bigs and get some more experience for them.

Before the season started, I was very hopeful that Destiny would be a polished leader able to feed Aquino and distribute the ball to our 3-pt shooters and people got on me for suggesting that having to use JG heavily would lead to a middling season for this team. It seems clear to me now that DS is not quite the savior I had imagined and that JG is still a dud defensively, even if she has improved her offense a bit. There still seems to be a lot of optimism by others on this board, but the optimism is rapidly draining out of me. We cannot win games versus the likes of UO and ND and SCar and Stanford without a much better post presence than JG can provide. ND's Shepard and UO's Hebard will beat JG like a dead horse. Rueck may be a good coach, but even he can't squeeze blood from a turnip. My hopes for a good post-season run now rest on the apparently unlikely return of a healthy Aquino. We are, indeed, in deep "dew-dew".
