First I have to say I was only able to view about 1/2 -3/4 of the game watching it being streamed. First a huge PEEVE! After every Beaver score they immediately (or a few seconds later) reshowed the shot twice (from different cameras) while the game was continuing. As far as the game I saw a small improvement in JO, but not enough for her to be a positive influence in the game. We are in deep "dew dew" if she is going to be our 5. I can't see her competing with PAC 12 Bigs. I have confidence that SR will get it figured out or you will see a 4 guard offense with a faster pace game. Before the season started, I was very hopeful that Destiny would be a polished leader able to feed Aquino and distribute the ball to our 3-pt shooters and people got on me for suggesting that having to use JG heavily would lead to a middling season for this team. It seems clear to me now that DS is not quite the savior I had imagined and that JG is still a dud defensively, even if she has improved her offense a bit. There still seems to be a lot of optimism by others on this board, but the optimism is rapidly draining out of me. We cannot win games versus the likes of UO and ND and SCar and Stanford without a much better post presence than JG can provide. ND's Shepard and UO's Hebard will beat JG like a dead horse. Rueck may be a good coach, but even he can't squeeze blood from a turnip. My hopes for a good post-season run now rest on the apparently unlikely return of a healthy Aquino. We are, indeed, in deep "dew-dew". Might as well not even play the games.

This is why we have a coaching staff Thickhead. Did you think we had an Elite 8 team at this time last year? In any case, you are correct that we need to find an answer for the 5, and I agree with you that JG is not the answer today. Coaching staff knows more than we do, and I have faith they will come up with the next best alternative. Re: Slocum, I have to say, she looked great in the last game. She ran the team well, made 4 3-pointers, 8 assists, and, played pretty solid defense (fighting through screens,etc.). We must have been watching different games?

I can't understand the negativity. This team isn't half as crappy as last year's team was after one game. It's not nearly as terrible as the 2017 team was, either. It might be roughly as bad as the 2016 team, but my recollection gets hazy. Fortunately, every other team in the country starts out sucking, too. The difference is that we suck less than most of them now, and we'll improve more than any of them through the season.

OK - it's first cup of coffee time for me, and I probably should hold off on this. But, what the heck, here we go.
Much of what thickhead says in his recent post makes sense. However, the way thickhead says what he says is irritating. His purple prose is offensive to more prudent minds. So is his tendency to buy the house on curb appeal.
Nevertheless, thickhead's basic message that Jo does not have the raw aptitude, nor the natural athleticism to keep up with quality posts is a point of view widely held in this forum.
Some people here believe that Rueck's coaching acumen will offset her limitations. Some don't. Some believe she has improved greatly over last year and that improvement will be enough. Some don't.
At this point in time there is no need to be overly conjectural on this topic. In 14 days the team will have finished fighting thru the best early season WBB tournament in memory. At that time the evidence will get sorted out in a very real way. By then we will have enough "performance evidence" that conjecture is less necessary.
Since last July I have been writing here in this forum that Thropay would end up being the 5 starter this season - and I have not seen anything in the first two games to make me think otherwise.
I'm among the throng hoping desperately that Jo makes a great leap forward this season. That she becomes another great OSU post player. I am cheering for her in every way possible. Coach needs a quality post to maximize his other incredible talents.
As of now, however, it looks to me like the Beavs are headed to a double high post offence with Thropay playing a mobile five. This will create a lot of problems when we face big, talented posts. On the other hand, it will provide greater team speed, increased shooting power and improved passing proficiency - and that will create big-time problems for other teams.
OK - now it's time for a second cup of coffee...... GO BEAVS !!

One matchup that is beginning to worry me is Cal. If we couldn’t stop Cal-Poly’s post, how in the world are we going to stop Anigwe. Anigwe shoots the 3 at a very high clip, and can also take it off the bounce. She will expose Jo more than anyone else in the Pac-12. We killed them last year because Gulich was superior to Anigwe. Much stronger and I’d just as quick. Jo has not been the answer at the 5 thus far. Doesn’t look like PM will be the answer in her scarce minutes. I hope Aquino gets a chance, I don’t want to see her redshirt this season, because I think she will be a crucial player down the stretch.
Has anyone heard any more news about Aquino redshirting? I was hopeful we’d see her last game.
FWIW, I wish the posts in our 2018 and 2019 classes were flipped. I feel like Jones and Brown would provide more of an immediate impact, and it would give Aquino and Morris time to develop since they may be a little further behind in terms of development.
Lastly, I’m not terribly concerned with where we’re at right now. Watched a little tsdtr yesterday and some UConn today and realized —wow, it really is November. No one looks polished yet! Just more concern than usual because of the void Marie left. Similar to the voids left by other greats - but we had better answers.

One player isn’t gonna cut it vs this all around, deep Beaver squad.

Thanks for the entertainment guys, enjoying my coffee and this board very much. AA - I recall Scott saying she is out and with no return date; so she wont play this season one could guess. I wonder if the coaching staff will throw PM more time early to prepare her, it makes sense as she is athletic and raw and if you look at the game yesterday S'Cuse ran some young athletic (raw) talls and they did pretty well against the ducks. Could be worth a gamble, as we all know you cant coach height. Is she ready? No, but if you never give someone the opportunity to step up - you'll never know.
If DS doesn't read the press and get ahead of herself (and the team for that matter) she will be the floor leader any team would want. There are a lot of big things being said about her and i hope she just gets to work and does the job because she is exactly what we need at the point.
I agree with TheGlove (Lastly, I’m not terribly concerned with where we’re at right now). Its early days and we have a great team of awesome young lady's with amazing talent so lets enjoy the ride and see what unfolds.

"Anigwe shoots the 3 at a very high clip" In the past three years Anigwe has made a total of 11 shots from the three. I'm not concerned. If the other teams posts start wandering out to the 3 I really hope Jo or whoever just says "You go girl" and hangs out under the basket to grab the rebounds when they miss.
St. Mary's isn't looking too bad so we should get a look at what SR has planned for the post this year.

She tried that last game...and the girl went 4-5. The girl is a junior and had never even shot a 3 in a game before.

If she has played much her first two year, and hasn't shot a three until now, it's very likely SR and company told the players to let her take that shot. I'm no coach, but I would bet against her making those and tell my team to let her prove she can make them....and she did, but it's probably not anything the coaches expected.

Devin Stanback is actually a 5th year senior who sat out a season after transferring from Pepperdine. Stanback will continue to be the featured player for Cal Poly the rest of the year. I took a look at her stats today. She is averaging 24.7 points per game through her team's first three games.

LOL, corvalley. I think we've gotten to the place as a program where being 'very good' is not quite good enough for some of us. I was thinking about this earlier today. Truth is, I don't expect this team to be a final four team, nor do I expect them to make the great eight, but if there is a coach that can take them there, it is SR (and some pretty good assistants here too). After thinking back at what I saw in this game, and looking at the stats, I feel pretty good about this season. Destiny only played 25 minutes, but had 15 points and 8 assist. Pretty good stats for those minutes, and when Pac12 season is here, I expect we will see her minutes much higher. Pivic played 34 minutes, with 15 points and 9 rebounds. I would take those numbers every game. There aren't many teams that can say they have two guards to match up with Destiny and MP. Throw in AG and KT, and the guard rotation is about as good as it gets. Taya had a great game as well, and I think she only played 24 minutes (or something like that). I'd probably take her 10 points and 7 rebounds as season averages as well. Katie Mac is the solid Katie Mac we expect, and she looks to be much more aggressive as needed this year. This team is most likely not going to have a Marie or Ruth type player in the post this year, but I think the players on board can be solid. Post defense and rebounding is going to be key, which is one reason I'm not sure SR will stick with Jo. Jo can throw in some points, but for her size, she hasn't had great rebounding these first two games, and her defense seems timid. I do think we will see continued improvement from her with experience this year. JT has a real shot at playing time this year. Between Maddie, Janassa, Jo, and Taya, someone needs to be tougher around the basket, and stronger at rebounding. I was around for the Gary Payton years at Oregon State. Gary carried the team often. He had solid players around him, but outside of Gary, the team was lacking in star power. Gary was good enough to carry the team. Who would ever forget the USC game at Gill? I don't know if Destiny is ready to do that yet, but I don't think she needs to. This team has a lot of talent, and that talent is only going to make it easier for Destiny to shine and do her thing as well. This team is going to win a lot of games this year, but my expectation would be to win slightly less than last year. I don't think they will win the Pac12, but one thing we have learned in recent years is that SR leads his teams to out perform expectations. Nobody will be happier than me if these girls do better than I expect. All the great years the lady Beavers have had recently, and I think last year was my favorite. I think this year may be even more fun. I can't wait for Taylor and Kennedy to join the team next year, and then Paige, Hailey, and Sasha the year after....oh wait, they haven't committed yet have they? Whoever they do land, I have confidence in this coaching staff to bring in players that fit the system well, because they've proved time and time again that they can do it.
