Looks like 2018-19 will be characterized by unprecedented (though young) bench depth. Looking well ahead, The season end will see the loss of KTmac (huge) and Jo (likely quite replaceable by AA and PM)...and THEN the incoming class, with Rueck & Co. recruiting that just keeps getting better. Beav WBB is here to stay as a PAC 12 contender.

If she can play great defense, she'll get playing time, like Gabriella. And then if she can play great offense, too ...
Simmons, a 5-foot-11 guard, said she can shoot the 3 and get to the basket. She prides herself on playing defense and was known for locking down players.
One of the things that makes me really high on Jasmine is a play in 3x3 that she made. Her team needed the ball back late in the game because they were behind. So she fouls the player with the ball but the ref doesn't call the obvious foul. She did this 2 more times and the ref still wasn't calling a foul. Finally, Jasmine puts 2 hands on the player and throws her bodily off her feet, off the court, and on her butt. They got the ball back after the free throws and won the game. She's got chutzpah, and she's not afraid to use it.

She appears to have a very high basketball IQ, I'm sure her mother had a lot to do with it. She made several statements that demonstrated it.
If her athletic abilities transfer to the big Five Conference's game, like it seems it will, she could be a big contributor for the next four years.

While there's no evidence she can dunk, there is some evidence that she could play small forward for us (and impudently flouts signs that would deny her self-expression).... No Hanging On RingsAs a prototypical average 18-year-old, I was almost 5'10" and 135 pounds. I could TOUCH the rim but I could not grab the rim. She is 5'11" and clearly must have a man's strength is those legs.

Just watched Australia beat the US in that Under-17 game and was impressed by Jasmine's defense. She played great positional defense and several times when her teammates messed up on coverage she immediately adjusted to cover the open person. On offense she had some good moves but then didn't make the layup. I think she had a little adrenaline rush from womping the US and was overshooting. With all the guards the Beav's have this year I don't think she will get a lot of playing time but with her defense I don't think Coach will hesitate to get her out on the court. Maybe she can be used to hound other teams hot hands to turn them cold?

And look at that old Gabby Hansen. Not that great an offensive player, but her defense kept her on the floor. Or put Jasmine on Queen Ionescu and shut Her Highness down. Don't underestimate Jasmine. I think she'll surprise. And she has demonstrated speed and an ability to aggressively attack the basket like no one else on our team (well, except Destiny). We need that kind of aggressiveness. Also note that against the USA in that U17 game, she had an injured hand, so it's hard to judge her shooting based on that game.

Also note that against the USA in that U17 game, she had an injured hand, so it's hard to judge her shooting based on that game. "Not that great an offensive player" is a very charitable way to describe Gabby's offensive skills. I think we would all collectively hold our breath when she would take a crack at three pointers or free throws or dribble drives (though I still remember instrumental treys from this unlikely source in the Stanford 2OT game and against Baylor). She would often get left completely alone so the spare defensive player could double Syd or Jamie or anyone not named Gabby. But I think that actually strengthens your point - despite noticeable shortcomings on offense, Gabby's defense was sooooo outstanding that she had to be on the floor for considerable minutes. So that is definitely a path forward for Jazz, where she could see the floor as a high energy defensive stopper. I also don't think she has a glaring weakness on the offensive side, which can't hurt. We have also (at least to date) had some needs at small forward that she might be able to fill. I think she is a very intriguing prospect, and I really look forward to seeing her this Fall. Our other incoming freshmen have the "you can't coach height" thing going for them, and they will see the floor given Marie's departure and Jo being a senior. But Jazz will have to bring something more to the party in order to get playing time this Fall/Spring, and all the film from the World games and 3x3 point to the fact that she has that "something". Go Beavers!

I'm way over my skis on being high on Jasmine (just based on watching some video of her, including her recent 3-3 games), but I just think she's going to be on the floor a lot. She just strikes me as a transitive player that allows coaches do a lot of different things (i.e. go much smaller because she can guard bigger players, play different defenses because she can shut down the oppositions best weapon, can rebound beyond her size, etc). She appears to be a true slasher (i.e. Pivec's ability to get to the rim, but doesn't hesitate when she gets there), which is a huge value to have to replace the loss of Marie that could collapse the defense for shooters, Jasmine may be able to do something similar with her slashing, which would take pressure of our young bigs needing to be offensive threats. She also appears to have a GP/GPII-type nose for intercepting passes and creating points off TOs, which also takes pressure off of scoring so much off of of half-court sets. Add to that a nose for rebounds and quick transitions into offense.
I have no credentials for all this hype though, mainly just a gut feeling. But I'm really looking forward to see what kind of impact she can make.

Another BeaverWBB Tweet about Jazz.
Early reports on the Australian freshman continue to be very positive. She is apparently the second fittest athlete on the team during early preseason running drills, based upon the sprint distances that Jeff Macy, the Associate Athletic Director for Sports Performance, has the players run.

Inquiring minds want to know, who was the winner. I'd guess Mik, since I think I remember her being a runner in high school.

Favorite sport other than basketball..... Aussie rules football. It figures, her dad was a very good player and apparently she used to play it as well. I doubt she is going to be pushed around. She should fit in well.
The biggest difference between the Beavers from a few years ago to the current team is mental. It really started with Kat and Mik, in their first couple games both had a defender try to grab the ball from them only to end up on the court after a text book hip toss. Aleah and Taya, while not quite as physical, showed a lot of mental toughness. Jazz appears ready to continue this trend.
