In the class of 2017 we signed Beaverton OF Kevin Watson. In June he was an 18th round draft pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks. They offered him $400,000.00 to sign and he did. He is now playing his second season for the AZ-Diamondbacks in the short-season Arizona Rookie League.
He's 19-70 and .270 with 12 runs, 8 RBI, 4 doubles, 2 triples and 1 home run. He's walked 9 times, struck out 29 times and is 3/4 in SBA. His OBP is .370 with a .429 SLG%.
In the class of 2018 we signed SS Jayce Easley from Sandra Day O'Connor HS in Phoenix. Subsequently, he was drafted in the 5th round by the Texas Rangers who offered him $500,000.00 and he accepted it. He's currently playing for the AZ-Rangers in the short-season Arizona Rookie League.
He's 28-76 and .271 with 22 runs, 9 RBI, 3 doubles, 12 BB and 16 K's. He's 13/16 in SBA, with a .455 OBP and a .408 SLG%.
Two talented youngsters that were totally committed to OSU baseball. Their professional dreams just came true a little sooner than others.

I wonder if either of them watched the dogpile in Omaha and had second thoughts. Go Beavs!! Somewhat relatable - I transferred high schools after my sophomore year. A new high school opened up in our district, and I had the opportunity to attend either one. I chose to attend the new school. My old school won the state championship in basketball my senior year. My school failed to make the state tournament. Was I bummed watching my friends and former teammates cut down the nets? YEP. Did I regret my decision? NOPE. And I didn't have half a million bucks to comfort me when I went home either.

No kid can make that decision. A adult should offer some wise words. Let's see, $500,000 with no mortgage and no dependents becomes $250,000 after taxes and all else. At 18, you have 50 years to social security. So, that's $250K/50 = $5k/yr. That's about what 5 days at Disneyland for a family four costs. Hope you find something to cover the other 360 days... You might think you're not a student... Guess what! You can change!

I thought the commentary the ESPN guys gave during the CWS about school or pros was interesting. They basically said going to school was a much better idea. In school you get 'taken care of'. Someone makes sure you are getting to practice, getting to class, are getting fed and you are learning how to live as an adult. In the pros it is all up to 'you'. Something most 18/19 year olds are clueless about. Playing in college is also about the name on the front of the uniform, playing pros is about the name on the back (succeed as others fail). Will a half million dollars sounds nice, without an education (and after paying uncle sam and all others 'helping you', it really isn't a lot of money). But as long as we lose to fish to pros and not to other schools..I wish them well.. Definitely better to lose a kid to the Cardinals instead of the Cardinal. Go Beavs!!

I want to go to Disneyland with you. Your family must know how to party! Lol.... nearly standard ticket these days.... $315 for a 3 day park hopper... It would be over $1200 just to get my family of 4 in the park. Ugh, and we are thinking about going for Christmas...

I'm guessing too much of it goes into purchases that depreciate instead.
