I posted yesterday that I did not begrudge TVO for leaving, although it was upsetting in the context of previous comments about staying and the thematic approach of "family" in regards to the WBB team, not family with us, that were upsetting. I was definitely worried about multiple players leaving and this fantastic, very special elite 8 team crumbling before our very eyes. But now that I've had time to think about this, you know what? I wouldn't blame them if they all left.
I used to think maybe the WCC would be enough of a league to provide real challenge and at least some exposure. But after doing more research, I tend to agree with someone yesterday that it's just a league of small, mostly religious schools. They have Gonzaga and some also-rans, especially now that BYU left. There aren't many WNBA stars from the WCC that I see and even one former player-of-the-year (granted from BYU) took off to Texas. We're essentially asking these women to go from playing in a 6A Metro league to playing city-rec basketball.
Can we offer them good exposure? Nope. Can we offer them a great NIL package (not that this should be the sole driving factor)? Nope. About the only hope we have is that if they stick together and they do smash the WCC next year, they might get an invite to the NCAA Tourney. And in 2 years, maybe they'll end up somewhere else. Maybe.
I think a lot of the frustration people are feeling is because we're just hitting that cliff of reality and everything is falling off the cliff, one sport at a time. All of the athletics (vs athletes - it's not idolization, rgeorge) that we prized are taking massive hits and we're just left to deal with it - because everyone else including the athletes and coaches can bail out.
As others have mentioned, having a community of fans that have appreciated watching players grow over the years, I wonder how we'll adapt to seeing the best taken every year and try to scramble to assemble a team every year. Will we still root for the institution? Sure. But after awhile, I think the product and the fanbase are also going to fall off a cliff. What to do...

If Rueck can pull off a UCONN-like pre-season schedule with former PAC-12 Teams and a few pre-season tournaments that provide high level competition, and even a few mid-conference games with some quality competition, then the lack of a competitive schedule goes away to a great extent. OSU had limited TV exposure to the greater nation this past year until they got into the NCAA Tournament.
OSU still has a lot to offer the remainder of the team: great coaches, a team of players that enjoy each other, Corvallis, adoration of BEAVERNATION, and an extremely bright future if they stay together. I think it comes down to OSU Athletic department providing a competitive schedule outside of the WCC.
I can't imagine OSU won't be able to schedule games with former PAC-12 schools in the pre-season. I sure hope Rueck has pulled the team together and asked for them to hold off making any portal declarations and has requested and received feedback to what the team needs/wants as well as individual needs/wants in order to stay at OSU next season.

It’s hard for me to totally understand where they are all coming from w their decisions to stay or not. But I feel the women’s team is a situation unlike the men’s, where it’s clear why they’d want to leave for a better opportunity.
I mean I just keep going back to every comment I’ve heard recently indicating how close they are and how much they love playing for coach and w each other. So why not run it back and make a big tourney run again? Yeah you won’t have as tough of a schedule. But is that really a bigger deal than playing w a team you claim to love?

I always have to try to remind myself that these athletes, and coaches are not exactly invested in the university like we are. They are invested in themselves first, obviously. My issue is when they talk about all the things making us feel like they are ALL IN.....and then they bail for money, or because we got hosed from P5 status. It's getting as bad as politicians.....tell em what they want to hear and do the opposite. Add in, that there is a GREAT nucleus(women's B ball) of young talent on this team.......if it falls apart like people are speculating, based on no more Pac 12.....well, for those that bail, have a nice life! Spare us the heartfelt exit speech. We will move on without you. We don't get to bail......and if you don't want to be here, we don't want you here.

If OSU isn’t good enough for the remaining ladies, then that’s on them. Because if they don’t leave they have such an outstanding team. A team which chances are would be better than almost any team they bail to. So if OSU isn’t good in women’s hoops next year, it’s only because the ones who thought it was inferior……made it that way by leaving. And I agree….the last thing I want to hear is some blah blah blah about great we are but I’m still abandoning OSU speech. |

Exactly... folks like to toss around "Beaver for ever" BS... how many of the 1000's of former players can match the emotional/physical ties and the years of dedication to OSU to most on this board let alone 1000's of other fans. In comparison these athletes give us joy and sorrow, but they're just "visitors" |

And there are a lot of OSU grads living in California. Between that and those who travel, you would think many of these games would have a good turnout of OSU fans. Maybe even a shot to have the majority in some cases. The WCC will have two of the top six on this list anyway. And I'm pretty sure OSU fans will bolster the Portland attendance significantly. I'm just not sure that the difference starting about where Washington is really makes a ton of difference. Is drawing 1,000-2,000 fans in 10.000-15,000 seat arenas really something to get all fired up about comparatively? |

I think USF's home court is War Memorial Gym. Without looking it up, I think capacity is 3000. |

How many of the players who are currently on the team would have come to OSU if they knew they
would be playing in the WCC? Some surely would have, but for others playing in one of the best women's basketball conferences in the country was part of the appeal of coming to OSU.

Well obviously that can't be our recruiting pitch. So we'll have to mimic Gonzaga's approach; seems to work great for them. Plus throw in the fact you can go to a football game on Saturday. |
