Word up.
Scouts say Justin Boyd is an advanced hitter. Learned the basics early, his Dad is the HC at Legend HS. Played in the Uber-competitive Continental League against Colorado's best competition. Had a good summer at the plate playing for the new WCL entry, the Ridgefield Raptors.
Senior: .487 with 20 XB hits including 7 dingers Junior: .478 with 18 XB hits including 8 homers Soph: .361 with 8 XB hits including 2 Dingers

Maybe I am underrating Ober in my head? I remember that there were points when we questioned his ability at first base. I can’t remember specific examples, but I suspect that with last year under his belt and some good coaching this year, he’ll be better at first. And his bat has definite potential. . Ober at first. To borrow a quote from moneyball “ first base is like the moon to him”

Kid can stroke with the bat.

Just want to say, to everybody posting in this thread: Thank you! Still 4 months to go and I'm ready for the first pitch. Love hearing these takes on our returning players.
GO BEAVS!

Checked his summer 2019 stats with Ridgefield (WCL). Pretty solid indeed. Most impressive (for a just out HS hitter going against Pitchers a bit older), only 18 SO in 104 ABs. Into the weeds a bit to compare that with the two OSU super-Freshman of 2016, who both played WCL in summer of 2015, just out of HS (their WCL stats that summer): Grenier 33 SO in 167 AB Madrigal 7 SO in 178 AB.....of course, there is only ONE Nick Madrigal.

Imagine someone nuts enough to want to catch for the Beavers following guys like Canham, Ice, Susac, and the last guy among others. Pressure and expectations. Admire the brass ones behind the cup.

Just hoping he's skilled enough to handle all of our pitchers. That's what we need from a catcher. The batting of Adley was just the whipped cream on top. Crazy amounts of whipped cream, though. Nearly more whipped cream than anything else. ;-)

Catcher Claunch 1B Ober/Cesar/McGarry/Gretler 2B Harvey 3B Dukart/Boyd/Gretler SS Armstrong/Mascarenas LF Casey/McLaughlin CF Melton/Casey RF McDowell/Young Interesting OF choices. Only 1 of the 5 players has ever had a D-1 ab (only 2 have ever had an at-bat at any college level). And then there's Preston Jones who started 32 games last season - admittedly his hitting was disappointing, and there were a couple poor choices in the field. But?

Catcher Claunch 1B Ober/Cesar/McGarry/Gretler 2B Harvey 3B Dukart/Boyd/Gretler SS Armstrong/Mascarenas LF Casey/McLaughlin CF Melton/Casey RF McDowell/Young I think McGarry has to be listed as the most solid starter - not sure if that's 1B, LF, or DH, but he's the only returning player who hit really well last season. Ober and Casey were good enough offensively that they should have spots penciled in. The rest of the returning guys were below average at the plate, but surely some guys out of the Harvey, Gretler, Claunch, Jones, McMahan, Armstrong, Dukart group will step it up this year, and some will get their ABs due to defense. I won't be so bold as to project which of the new faces might break into the line-up, but there's always gonna be someone. Honestly, it's the starting pitching that's going to be the main concern this season. Less than 40% of our total innings pitched returns, and only 10 of the 57 starts - 3 of which belonged to Abel. It's gonna be an interesting season to watch, probably a lot of growing pains in the beginning, but hopefully a team that can gel by the end of the season.

Why no Jones or McMahan in your OF? You know something about that? I'd expect both to be in starting lineup.
My guess for DAY ONE:
C - Claunch 1B - Ober 2B - Harvey 3B - Dukart or Cesar SS - Army OF - Casey, McMahan, Jones DH - McGarry

Projections posted based purely on what I saw this fall. No extra nod given to returners. Highly speculative I acknowledge. Premium on ball striking mixed in with playing time and when that occurred. I would say the only certainties based on the criteria are Claunch catching, Harvey at second and Casey in left.

I didn't get to watch any fall ball, but based on last years observations I think Dukart has the make up of a SS. I love Army but put him at 3rd and the Duker at SS, but Dukhart is gonna have to hit better to crack that lineup.
I think this lineup will be based on hitting and I have no idea how well the newcomers can hit or the progress the kids from last year are making.
In the infield, I'm most excited about Harvey's bat from the returners. He showed some signs of power toward the end of the year.
Ok... I'm ready to get blitzed for my vote for SS. Lay it on me!

Based on what I saw during fall ball, and I saw a lot, I'd be surprised to not see McDowell starting somewhere.
