Oregon State last won the Pac-10 in 1990. In 1990, the Beavers jumped out to a 10-1 conference record. Since 1990, Oregon State's best 11-game conference start has been 7-4. Since 1990, no Oregon State team has started conference play 8-4. Oregon State is 15-8 overall. In the 29 years since 1990, the number of 15-win seasons (not including the 5-1 mark that Craig Robinson posted in the 2009 CBI) since 1990: Six. In Wayne Tinkle's five years, Oregon State has hit the mark in three. After 1990, Jim Anderson hit the mark once, Jay John hit the mark once, and Craig Robinson hit the mark once. Neither Eddie Payne nor Ritchie McKay ever posted a 15-win season.I hate to be THAT guy... but we are 7-4 when we should of been 8-3. losing by 23 at home to 11-9 mediocre Stanford is why WT keeps finding his seat warm, when otherwise he is having a great year by our standards. I like to try and be positive, but it is these missed opportunities against inferior teams that keep taking the luster off this season. We should be a minimum of +3 games this season from where we are right now. It is aggravating. This gets to be something akin to a Riley at the end discussion. Riley had the mind-numbing bad losses and never could win the one that would have pushed Oregon State over the top. My argument was that Riley still was able to overcome those losses and put Oregon State into a position to play that one big game. And without Riley, you would not have to worry about losing those big games anymore, because Oregon State would not be in a position to take advantage of the opportunity. My other point, which still is true in my opinion is that our Athletic Director is very below average. If you remove the guy that is doing something with nothing, you are highly likely to wind up with an average or even below average coach, who will do exactly nothing with nothing. At the end of the day, Tinkle is light years better than any coach that has been on the sidelines since Ralph Miller. Does that mean that he is the absolutely best coach ever? Probably not. Could Oregon State do better? Probably, but I am going to go out on the world's shortest limb and say that Barnes is flatly incapable of finding that needle in a haystack coach that would be better than Tinkle. I will say the same thing that I said to everyone who would listen 18 years ago: When Smitty leaves, you will miss him. (When a bunch of yokels were calling for DA to start over Smitty.) And a half-decade ago: When Riley leaves, you will miss him. And today: When Tinkle leaves, you will miss him.

Barnes has made four hires since becoming AD.
Smith: Solid so far.
Boss: Outstanding. NCAAs first year.
Quintana: Outstanding. Dramatic improvement in T&F, CC took sixth at Pac-12s and went to NCAAs in Year II, something that had never happened.
Kagan: TBD. Excellent credentials.
Hopefully he won't have to look for a MBB. I want Tinkle to succeed.

Tinkle has one of the more fascinating situations here, as he has coaches' kids who are top recruits helping him, as well as injury excuses he can use to leverage any loss. It's almost like the weather man where even if things go wrong, you can always blame something because of circumstances.
It will be interesting where we end up

Ah yes the old "he sucks less than our previous sucky coaches" argument. Hopefully Scott Barnes doesn't buy that argument, and I highly doubt he does. Neither of us know how warm or not Tinkle's seat is. Given his own, his kids', and the MBB PR staff's ongoing defensiveness against any all and criticism, I'm guessing he is feeling some heat. Edit: I used the word "suck" as an exaggeration, I don't think Tinkle sucks as a coach, I in fact think he's decidedly average. Yes, hopefully, Scott Barnes can hire a head basketball coach. We all know how well that turned out last time: If Tinkle has to go, and I think that that is lunacy at this point. But if Tinkle has to go, you have to make sure that Barnes has no part in the hiring process in any capacity. Not saying I'm a huge fan of Barnes, but has he made a hire here that hasn't worked out yet? Jonathan Smith had a real low bar to clear in year one, but he did win a Pac-12 game, so the trajectory is good so far. Terry Boss led OSU to maybe its most successful men's soccer season ever? Within a game of winning the Pac-12. Louie Quintana took the Cross Country team to the NCAAs for the first time ever. Matt Kagan is TBD with the women's soccer team Pat Bailey is TBD with the baseball team (though I'd bet Pat Casey made that hire).
