Will we see Chamberlain in the outfield? He hit .444 his junior year in HS, with 21 doubles, 12 triples, and five homers, kid can hit. i really want to see him as a weekend starter. So many options for the third starter. We know about Kevin Abel. i don't see how Fehmel isn't a starter. Sure he had some rough spots in Omaha but he is 26-5 regular season. How do you not pencil him in for another 10 wins to help you get you back to Omaha again? So the 3rd starter could be Mulholland, Eisert, Chamberlain or if you want to save them and have the best lefty bullpen in college baseball, you could try out Gambrell, Verburg or some other darkhorse. Mulholland and Eisert are older, stronger and have the most repeatable motions . Mulholland has the best location but Eisert is the hardest to pick up, the way he shields his release from the hitter. No way to predict a year ahead really. Beavs went from having a really "thin" bullpen (Casey's words in April) to having the best bullpen in Omaha.

I think we can safely say that history shows a couple guys will make THE LEAP next year and we just don't know who it is yet.. Some of my favorite leapers: Larnach, Adley, Dylan Davis, Tyler Smith, Jake Thompson, Matt Boyd from solid reliever to ace.. edit - I forgot Kwan. Freshman year Kwan.. man I thought I'd never see him hit it out of the infield...
My early front runner is Malone. Malone is a good call to really breakout next season. Armstrong, Taylor, and Jones are other veteran guys who hopefully take big leaps forward next season.

Malone yes. He can become a complete hitter and not just a pull hitter. 2018 Beavers scored in bunches with RISP because Madrigal, Larnach, Kwan Adley and Gretler all hit to opposite field as the situation demanded it.

My hope is that one of the Freshman or new roster adds can play the outfield, Preston Jones will be a starter and I'd imaging Casey will also be a regular starter in the OF. Is it crazy to hope that Malone or Taylor can be an outfielder? I think we need them both in the lineup.
We probably need a new face to be a starter in the infield as well, Andy Armstrong will be a starter, McMahon might get another spot and then you have Malone and Taylor as 1b options. I'd still like to see Claunch find a regular place in the line up as well.
I think we have the guys to step up and contribute with a few new faces sprinkled in the mix. I do think the Pitching staff will be a good one.
If you want to go real crazy... try making the batting lineup for next year.LOL

Batting Order / Lineup prediction as of 6/29/2018 Preston Jones CF Andy Armstrong 3B Tyler Malone DH Adley Rutschman C Zak Taylor 1B Joe Casey LF Zach Clayton RF Beau Philip SS Kyler McMahan 2B Ober at third, Armstrong at short or second, Mendazona at short or second, and McGarry as a platoon outfielder. By the way, Mendazona is playing for Kalamazoo this summer. Also, 3 future Beavers are playing at Goss next week for Chaffey against the Utah Marshalls. High level, 18-u series.

Even though it was a small sample size - he hit really well when he got the chance. Worst case scenario is that he catches 1/3 on the weekends with Rutsch taking over at 1B on the days Claunch catches. A better scenario would be if either Claunch or Rutsch can handle another position on the field either for the season or for the days Claunch catches. Johnny Bench used to play OF on days he didn't catch early in his career. SaveSave

Forgot about Claunch. As Kersting notes, Claunch will at least be a platoon guy at some position when not catching.

Going to be hard to follow up what they have done in the last two years. The bats will come around, and the pitching looks very promising. I do think it is unlikely that we will ever again see the defensive strength up the middle in the infield that we lost today. If I am not mistaken, the pac-12 road schedule will be brutal. Washington, Stanford and UCLA all on the road.

As far as the infield goes, Gretler's brother might be ready to play. McMahan seemed to be the first off the bench after Armstrong but Ober and Zalesky saw some action if I remember correctly. Casey mentioned that he had some very talented kids on the team that just couldn't crack the starting lineup, we may be surprised how good they are. Didn't Menazona, Foster, McGarry and Verberg redshirt? Did Verberg redshirt? I am sure that he was introduced at Goss this afternoon.
