A question for the group. What in your expert opinion is the reason (or reasons) for the dramatic drop off in Luke's pitching during the college world series (arm trouble, pressure of the event, worried too much about impressing scouts, or other reasons)?
To a lesser degree, what is affecting Fehmel's performances?
It's frustrating to think that with average performances from these two we have an excellent chance at winning the series, but if they continue their norm for the series we are probably in deep trouble.
Thanks for your responses

There could be 1000 reasons.
Lucky/unlucky bounces. Didn't match up well with those hitters. Tired arm. Just facing better players. Pressure got to them. Ump was squeezing them. They've really sucked this whole time, but finally stopped being lucky. Randomness. Ump hates OSU.
No one is going to be able to pinpoint a reason for you.

If I recall, thought there was another hit that I thought Gretler should have gotten to. I thought he looked much better compared to UNC Game 1, hit his spots for the most part until the 3rd when the wheels fell off and got the quick hook. I'm actually not too concerned.

better hitters. Every time you level up in the CWS the bats get more dangerous. Also some of these umps have been lame at calling balls and strikes. Tired arms is also a factor.

My opinion was the high temps and the pressure from the controversy. JMHO

That's my thought. A part of me thinks he was getting squeezed because of the elephant in the room, but I think it's my bias that says that.

Less rest, higher usage, simply tired arms. Just need them one more time this season.

This might be Luke's last baseball game ever. Hopefully he'll give it everything he's got and leave it all out on the field.

FWIW, Luke's now apparently getting some interest from the KC Royals. Maybe some relief there for him and if umps would stop shifting strike zone would be a big help. Luke's control is (usually) good enough that he paints corners and gets lots of strike calls. I think that shifting strike zones effect his psyche more than most because he is usually so precise.
Not especially worried about Fehmel-- he's a down and dirty competitor and usually does well against SEC "he-man" baseball.

I think Luke is facing the most basic of problems: relaxing and having faith when you want something very bad.
I would like him to link up with Adley on the process of "relaxing" in the moment.
I think our team came out of the rain delay with a feeling of "We can do this. We don't need to be more than we are." Luke needs this.
Also, I am very impressed with Larnach. He is not trying to hit homers when others are hitting them. I hope he explodes in this next series. He has a good chance of it because he isn't trying too hard.

It would be simple to say it is controversy if it were just Luke, but it is our top two guys, and I just think that it is tired arms (along with a bit of this that and the other thing when it came to situational stuff). - they had to pitch longer into games during the regular season due to bullpen uncertainties and Luke doesn't get to 16-2 without a ton of innings pitched, let alone set all kinds of pitching records. But our defense has returned to pre-Series form, and we are bashing the ball. Average outings will look above average now.
But this is for all the marbles, and if our top two can go on a controlled adrenalin rush, and give us 7 innings each, our chances are very good. I am a bit more concerned about Jake - there are two ways to respond to the kind of stress he went through that last inning against Mississippi St. It can either make you stronger, mentally tougher, or it puts you on edge. I'd like to think that Kevin Gunderson gave him a call in the past few days. No one had less fear and more desire to tear your heart out that he did when it was two out in the 9th.
