Does anyone else feel like he was inconsistent on balls and strikes? I am not just talking about the Beavers, he was clearly missing the calls for both sides. His low strike / ball zone was so unpredictable, I lost all ability to even wildly guess which way the call might go. His other big miss was with balls that could not have been more perfect than if they had been launched by a pitching machine. How can you miss a fastball at 90mph that travels at perfect height, right through the heart of the plate? This did not just happen once or twice. He also missed called strikes on several balls to the outside corner on both right and left handed hitters. Catchers had to slide up to half a foot off the plate to receive the ball. i have not watched the recording yet, but, I don't think it will do anything but reinforce my initial criticism. Hope we get something better in Omaha.

If the strike zone expanded and expanded for both teams and it wasn't so outrageous as to be a big factor in the game. Got to remember he saw six different pitchers with six different styles and if the Batters have to adjust the umpires have to adjust to and it can take some time. And it was a big game for him to. Umpires can be just as influenced by the fact that it's the super regionals second game everything on the line to go to Omaha as any guy stepping into the box with a piece of metal.

Fair comments. However, in the interest of the hitters and the coaches and fans, it would be nice not to have to anguish over almost every call on every pitch. Yes, I agree that the different pitchers and their different 'stuff' can affect the calls.I guess that is why it is not easy to go behind the plate... just super frustrated from what happened to us in Omaha last year and hoping we don't get that treatment again.

I guess I will be in the minority here. I thought with the exception of a few pitches late in the game, he was one of the better umpres behind the plate we have seen all year. His zone was consistently accurate at the knees and the corners consistent albeit somewhat of a tight zone. I made the comment to my wife during the game that I wished we had him the entire year instead of many of our Pac-12 umps who at times are very bad umpires. Not just inconsistent but all over the place on everything behind the plate and in the field.

Been watching the replay on ESPN3. I don't see anything out of the ordinary. Imperfect, but nothing worth complaining about.

Been watching the replay on ESPN3. I don't see anything out of the ordinary. Imperfect, but nothing worth complaining about. There’s a Minnesota fan on Twitter who claims that the umpire was calling balls that were in the other batter box as strikes for Minnesota and not doing that to OSU. I could not bring myself to watch the game (I’m cowardly that way - don’t want to jinx anything), so I cannot comment one way or another. Anybody see anything to prove or disprove his complaints or was it just sour grapes?

I thought he was fairly consistent with both teams. The Beavs swung at strike three, the Gophers watched them. Their frustration is understandable, but I vote for sour grapes.

Thanks for your take on it. Like I said, I’m too darn cowardly to watch the games, so I just didn’t know how to respond (I just didn’t say anything).

Or... hurt feeling and disappointment as voiced many many times on this board when things don't go the Beavers way! Many opportunities went unused by both teams. It wasn't the umpire, but understand how they can feel that way. Easier to crap on 'blue" than look in the mirror.

There wasn't a pitch called a strike even close to the other batters box. Yes, the umpire gave the pitch just outside the plate but it was given to both pitchers no matter who was in there at a given time. As far as the one Minnesota player complaining about the third strike call, he had to know the umpire was calling those pitches strikes. He should have had it in his brain that pitch is being called a strike and fouled it off or put it in play. Now, did the umpire miss some pitches that he has called strikes? Yes, he did, but again he was even in that department also. Umpires are not perfect. y.

I found it kind of interesting that he would use the “in the other batter box” comment, since that really did happen to us in Omaha last year. I almost wondered if he was kind of mocking OSU, even though there is video proof of just such calls last year. I’m guessing if the calls were really that egregious, it would have been replayed many times over, just like it was last year.

I was a little nervous about the ump at first. His little dance - or perhaps he views it as an emphatic strike call - smacked of an ump who wants to insert himself into the game in a major way. Turns out that wasn’t the case. He missed calls, but it seemed fairly equal both ways and wasn’t any worse than others I’ve watched.

Mulholland and Chamberlain had sliders that were breaking a ton. Where Rutschman caught the ball was different from where they crossed the plate. This might have something to do with the Twitter complaints.
