Having attended the 2007 CWS in person, this is the most vivid memory for me. It was at this point I felt we won the national championship. Any hope for North Carolina was seemingly crushed on this play. The roar from the OSU crowd on this was deafening. I was no longer nervous. Jordan Lennerton then hit a 2 run shot and the party was on.

Let's watch it, shall we? I still describe that as a poor job of "situational awareness" by UNC 3B/HC Mike Fox. You're down 7-3. Score that run and it's still 7-4. No reason to take that chance there. Best case scenario is 7-4 with 1 out and a man on 3rd and you have a good chance at making it 7-5 - that's still not winning you the game. Worst case scenario is that rally-killing play at the plate, and the game is basically over. Hold the runner, and you're down 7-3 with runners at 2nd and 3rd and you've still got a good shot at closing to 7-5, not much worse than the BCS. |
