Hey all, just made an account ahead of the upcoming series for the weekend. I'd like to preface all of this by congratulating OSU on another very successful season thus far. Gopher fans have alot of respect for how good of a team Oregon State is and we're all expecting a very tough series for our squad. We're all obviously very excited in Minnesota about the Twins drafting Trevor Larnach yesterday. The average baseball enthusiast in our state has heard of Madrigal and Heimlich for all the publicity each has gotten for better or worse, but aren't too familiar with Larnach. Anything we should know that Beaver Nation has seen in him over the past three years besides the power he's developed?
Also, how do you all anticipate the Beavers matching up with our guys and what are some strengths and weaknesses for your team that'll either play to your advantage or give the Gophers an edge in the series?
As for the Gophers, here are a few things that stick out about them...
1) It's been a tale of two seasons. The guys started off the year slow but changed things around in a hurry and have recently won 16 of their last 17 games. We're one of the hottest teams in the country right now.
2) The Gophers are an extremely well coached team. John Anderson has been at the helm for 37 years now and makes excellent in game decisions and develops guys the right way with his long time asst coach Rob Fornassiere.
3) The Gophers don't have an easy out in the entire lineup. Our 9 hitter is hitting .323 on the year. Vavra is the real deal.
4) Minnesota is outstanding in the field and they rarely ever beat themselves on defense. Boxwell had some trouble in center during our regional but you aren't going to see the Gophers make mistakes.
5) We do a lot of situational bunting to move runners over and our guys are good at laying quality bunts down.
6) The starting rotation is really only two deep. Fredrickson and Meyer can go toe-to-toe with any lineup in the country, but if the series goes to a game 3 that's going to be advantage Beavers. (Fredrickson is a 3/4 arm slot pitcher with a long arm motion and Meyer works fast with a high release point).
7) Our freshman closer Max Meyer is one of the top closers in the country and has electric stuff that’s going to get him drafted high in 2 years. He can go 2 or 3 innings for the save if need be. Has a fastball that sits 94-96 and a really solid curve.
8) Gophers are prone to leaving and abnormally high number of runners left on base and our bats shut down some against better pitchers, so that could be an area of concern for our guys.
Looking forward to a competitive regional and interested to hear what everyone thinks!

Kwan is a top notch center fielder so guess that’s different. Has an average arm but makes up for it with throw preparation and accuracy. There’s two solid starters one a consistent lefty the other a crafty veteran right hander, who came in as a middle infielder. Oregon State hopes to have found its number 3 guy in Kevin Abel who pitched well against LSU The Beavs are very tough in Goss and that may well be the decider. This’ll be fun. In regards to Larnach, with a great hitting coach and sports psychologist he’ll be a major league hitter in four seasons minimum. Expect a high average, high home runs and strike outs. Technically, if he hits more linearally and keeps from over rotating and rolling his wrists, he’s dynamite. He will take called Ks but you live with it from a power guy.

Nice to hear from an opposing fan who acts like a normal person. Nice change from last week.

Welcome! I have a good buddy who is a Gopher, and we're looking forward to the matchup!
I think most teams overlook just how disciplined our hitters are. We will make your pitchers throw strikes and beat us that way. We have scored multiple runs this year on walks.
Otherwise, our great strength is our defense. We aren't just solid in the infield, but we have athletic, play-making guys who will blow your mind with their defense.
Then, you're stuck playing us at home. We don't have a large stadium, but we have a raucous, baseball-loving crowd.
Should be an exciting matchup! Congratulations on making it this far!

The analysis you gave of your team mirrors the Beavers. Way to smoke UCLA by the way.

Small ball with good defense. I love it. It's about time we can play a team not on the West coast that can bunt and field a bunt with competency.
This is the best hitting team we have ever had, although they can go quiet for entire games which is weird and then go nuclear the next. We have homerun power throughout the lineup, with exception of Kwan and Madrigal (although they both went deep last weekend).
We play small ball, and will bunt for hits. Our middle D can make some crazy defense plays, but sometimes forces errors with that mindset. Still we are one of the best fielding teams in conference.
We don't steal a lot, but when we do we are pretty successful. Nobody tries stealing on us for the most part because our catcher is awesome. Future top 10 pick next year, some are saying number 1.
Our bullpen can be shaky. We have a closer that has a ton of saves, but I think he still makes a lot of us nervous if the game is close.
Heimlich our number 1 is a power lefty that has good heater, slider, and change-up. He likes to get ahead of batters. He strikes a lot of people out early, and starts fading around 6th or 7th inning, although his stuff is still good.
Femmel is a precision righty. Not over powering stuff but he changes speed and location really well. Quick delivery prevents base stealers.
Abel is our Freshmen 3rd starter. Has probably the best stuff on the staff, but has control issues. He can walk as many as he strikes out. He had his best outing last week against LSU. Pac-12 teams were more patient batters, and forced him to pitch well. Day 3 was already our Achilles hill. We usually pieced together a pitching staff, and some Pac-12 teams pitched one of the top guys on day 3 to get a win from us (which they did).
Good luck to you guys.

Thank you, mngopher. I will promptly relay your inside information on gopher baseball to our coaching staff, thus, I'm sure, giving us the edge that we need to defeat you. You've made it pellucidly clear that we just need to watch out for bunts, get you guys to leave a bunch of runners on base, and somehow engineer a game 3 where we will have an advantage. Now, after your foolish public revelations, the loss will be laid at your feet, so you can kiss your fellow gopher fans goodbye.

Been reviewing the minnesota ucla regional - the 13-8 beatdown was impressive but it seems fatigue and a steady exit wind contributed to it . Three games in 26 hours probably had the bruins lapsing defensively. Teams rarely come back from the loser bracket when they get tired. Minnesota is a grinder team apparently and their solid focus eroded UCLA's resolve. The key game was really the 3-2 extra inning win in the second round. Bruins stranded 12 runners in that one, blowing a 2-1 lead. That was a magic win for the home team. If UCLA wins that one i feel they win that regional and advance to Corvallis instead of the gophers. All credit to Minnesota however, they earned the home field advantage and then parlayed that into victories against a probably more talented UCLA team by playing steady, clutch baseball and keeping the pressure on. Problem for them is they now play a team that will do exactly the same thing to them. Goss is tough on all visitors even the pac 12 teams that know it well and are familiar with the intimate (some would say chatty) venue . For an out of conference squad to fly across the continent, drive to corvallis, experience the where the hell are we exactly? phenomena is a subtle package of disadvantages. I say its too much for Minnesota and i'm going to call it right now: Beavs Sweep 7-2 and 4-3.

All good stuff... But back to Larnach.... he has really developed defensively as a great outfielder. Not the fastest but he reads the ball well, has good timing on his dives and catching the ball at the wall. Offensively, he is just a stud! When he hits the ball it just sounds different then everyone else. A sharp single can sound like an average hitters HR. He has power to all fields and seems to do well with pitch selection. I felt like he was being pitched around the entire regional. He was patient and took the walks. I expect great things out of Larnach as a pro. I don't recall him struggling with any certain pitch or placement. Just an all around great player with the height, 6'-4" and the frame to add some more muscle and watch the power numbers continue to increase. He is a good one and knows how to win

Prior to the draft I was reading a few previews and one guy had an MLB comp for Larnach as Freddie Freeman (hitting-wise). Another guy had a side by side clip of Larnach's swing/stance vs Rafael Palmiero and said that Larnach reminded him of Palmiero. So take that for whatever it's worth ( disclaimer: not much). Anyhow.. welcome.

Great thread - learned a lot about OSU baseball... mngopher - -nice to read comments from a fan who loves his team, wants them to win, but is also genuinely interested in, and respectful of, the opponent... Nice relief from last week's podunk yahoo from LSU.......44 chest and size 4 hat gets very tiresome...
As far as the Supers go - anything can happen in a win-2 series. But the Beavs are loaded with bats, they play great defense, they have excellent pitching, and they also have two additional names that will probably turn the tide this weekend: Goss & Casey....
Personally, I think it's going to be Beavs in two.....
GO BEAVS !!
