They can hit, team average of .302, top 3 guys look to be key ones as they have 150+ runs compared to 240 rest of team
leadoff Peterson .328 average, 3-2 BB-K ratio, 13 SB
#2 Mezzegra .378 average, all singles, 1-1 BB K ratio, 12 SB
#3 Vavra at .392 with 10 HR and 59 RBI, 3-2 BB-K ratio
That said, rest of lineup has some teeth, #9 Hanson at .323 and solid slugging, #6 McDevitt with 9 HR and #7 Boxwell with 6 HR
Pitching looks really solid too. Closer numbers and top two starters as well as 3 bullpen guys very nice #'s
Closer Max Meyer, 25 G, 16 SV, 40.1 IP, 11 BB, 49 K, 1.34 ERA, .145 BAA SP Reggie Meyer, 103 IP, 14 BB, 67 K, 2.62 ERA, .226 BAA SP Patrick Fredrickson, 92 IP, 24 BB, 70 K, 1.76 ERA, .200 BAA 3 other bullpen guys with 14+ Games, 23-50 IP and ERA 1.90-2.09
Solid club on paper. We'll get them buy won't be easy!

kerry eggers has a good writeup today on the regionals and what's to come. Pat Casey is a young whippersnapper against the Minnesota coach. Dude's been there 37 years. That's what like 1980? Eggers also makes an interesting comparison to 2006/2007. Those teams had deeper bullpens. Ok. But how many of those arms go unused when your starters blaze through 7-8 innings? Somebody who knows more can say for sure but i don't remember those teams having dominant headliners like Luke, Fehmel and Abel. We will find out if Eisert and Mulholland and some smatterings of Pearce, Chamberlain, Tweedt are all that is needed because the starters are just that solid. There is no question the defense is equivalent or better than 2006/2007. And the hitting lineup is much more stacked than those years. I am sure someone will look up the team era etc and tell me if am wrong. Anyway here's the article Portland Tribune

Here's Kerry Eggers take on the Regionals and what's up next for the beavers. Pat Casey is a young whippersnapper against the Minnesota coach. Dude's been there 37 years. That's what like 1980? Portland TribuneThose quotes in the Tribune article from Casey about Abel are so similar to what was being said about Jake Thompson not all that long ago. It took Jake a couple years. It'd be nice if we get a post-season (2018) and two full (2019, 2020) from the Abel that Kevin has rapidly grown into.

Anyway here's the article Portland TribuneThe main pitchers in: 05: rotation - Buck, Nickerson, Maxwell; relief: Gundy, Fogle 06: Buck, Nickerson, Stutes; relief: Gundy, Kunz, Paterson (and who can forget Turpen's spot start in Omaha). 07: Stutes, Reyes, Turpen; relief: Paterson (was starter most of the year, became relief in tournament), Kunz, Grbavac We had a solid 3 starters each year, as well as a solid closer at minimum. The start by Abel yesterday was Turpen-esque. A guy giving his best performance of the year in the tournament.

The start by Abel yesterday was Turpen-esque. A guy giving his best performance of the year in the tournament. We had great pitching staffs 05-07, Gundy was as tough as they came out of the bullpen, and Reyes was a rare freshman that nothing seemed to bother, for example (don't get named WS top player otherwise). This year I sort of feel like the 3rd pitcher/bullpen (cept for Mulholland especially) has been a bit of the mystery meat situation, until one day you get served and there is prime rib on the plate
