Serious question: What's with all the purple? LSU and Northwestern both sport purple. That can't be a coincidence, can it?

Thanks. That's what I was thinking, but then I couldn't figure out why the Saints are not purple.

I know two now in Louisiana with a thing for purple. Wasn't sure if it was perhaps a Prince thing. What the heck happens when you play each other? Oh wait, no, I don't really want to know.

Serious question: What's with all the purple? LSU and Northwestern both sport purple. That can't be a coincidence, can it? I've been meaning to ask what's with the orange and black is that a Halloween thing? Trick or Treat! Orange is typically known as a pro-Protestant/anti-Catholic color. Oregon State was founded by a group of largely insane Episcopalians. For fun, you can read about the Episcopalian-State of Oregon lawsuits in the University's early history. Ultimately the State of Oregon won the final lawsuit, but orange was already selected as the official color. After the State of Oregon won the final lawsuit, the official color was not changed. I believe that Oregon State's official color is orange because of the school's early Protestant associations. However, the selection of orange may be in response to Oregon selecting green and yellow as colors, orange being seen as the most anti-green color. (Of course, Oregon's original color was lemon yellow, not green, so I do not know how seriously I take this theory.) As for black, Oregon State's baseball team often claims 1907 as a founding date, but the yearbook clearly references a team in 1894. That baseball team wore black. (Because black was inexpensive.) The student body at the time, perhaps inspired by the baseball team, voted for black as a secondary color. (However, black was never "officially" made the second color..............whatever the heck that means.) The baseball team appears to have been discontinued in 1899 or before (in favor of indoor baseball). No baseball, indoor or outdoor, was fielded by 1905. The "founding" 1907 team were probably the first team in at least eight years but were not the first baseball team that Oregon State fielded.

Lewis & Clark College was originally founded by a bunch of crazy Presbyterians in Albany. The school chose orange and black as its colors in the 1880s. When the crazy Episcopalians at Oregon State chose orange and black as colors, it caused some enmity between the two schools. Albany College was something of a rival of both Oregon and Oregon State for several years but did not keep up with the other two Universities. Albany College began to move to Portland in 1934, completing the move in 1939. Albany College changed its name to Lewis & Clark College in 1942.
