JOEY MUNDT RHP 6-5, 227 MODESTO, CA. - CENTRAL CATHOLIC HS
Played on two young teams during his junior and senior seasons at Modesto-CC high school. Pitched and played some in the infield for the Raiders. In his senior season, CCHS finished 11-14 overall with a 5-9 record in the Valley Oak League. Finished in seventh place and did not qualify for the CIF Sac-San Joaquin Section playoffs.
Playing with pain and experiencing back seizures, Mundt pitched on sheer will according to Head Coach Ayala. Unable to diagnose the problem, Mundt played 11 games into his junior season before the coaches and school decided to shut his season down. Eventually diagnosed with a fractured vertebra in his spine.
Athletic and a big framed, a power pitcher that consistently throws in the high 80’s and can crank it up to 90-91 when needed. Has a good 3 pitch mix with a live fastball, curve and deceptive change. Generally has good command of his stuff and has demonstrated a 1.64:1 K to BB ratio over his three years of varsity ball. His high school and summer team coach has been Bobby Ayala, a longtime and respected area coach who thinks Mundt will be a June draft prospect – he’s considered to have a high ceiling. Older brother Sam pitches for Utah, oldest brother Johnny played TE at Oregon and now played two seasons for the L.A. Rams and is now a free agent in the NFL. A farm boy from Hughson, he’ll be an Ag major at Oregon State.
