I'm a D Bar guy......Wallace to Barney to Canham seals it. CF......I like Kwan but Max Gordon destroyed the ducks more then once so he's up there. there’s Kwan, and indeed Max was entertaining as hell... That kid from Madras was a pretty OK CF-er, wasn’t he? Yeah, whatever happening to him?

LOLOLOL....it was always an adventure with Max. He would take a terrible route to the ball...then make up for it by making a sensational catch. I think there was one in LCF vs @stanford that was unreal. It sorta was fun to watch Max in the sense of Reverse rollercoasters. First your stomach drops as you think there is no way he can make the play after his start. Then WHAM! He caught it???!!! I think you nailed it on why Kwan is so good. He takes such a direct route to the ball. His gps software is the latest and greatest. Yah, but Max made more ESPN top 10 reels than any other Beaver - fortunately they never took the time to show the mistakes in judgment, just the raw athletic ability to make up for them

The late Ken Bowen. Outstanding, outstanding player who would have played on any of our CWS clubs. I'm with you Henry, although a little Newberg prejudice. Kenny was a really good SS, and probably would have been in the show had his life not ended prematurely. As one of Pat's closest friends, he would have probably included him in the convo.

statistically its not close as a fielder. Cayden has 23 errors in his career, DB had 24 his sophomore season with a career total of 63. Cayden and Nick are the 2 most talented middle infielders in OSU baseball history. Nick has made 10 errors in his time at OSU. Cayden makes tough plays look routine and next year balls will go thru the left side for hits that most fans won't relive would have be outs with Cayden there. I give him a slight edge over Nick in the field because he will be able to stick at shortstop at the next level. either way, we as fans need to enjoy these two guys while we have them. I would say we will never see a pair together like that again.

This is fun. I've been having this conversation with my friendwho doesn't post on here....
He says Barney is the Best SS.
I say Cayden is the Best SS!
Maybe we get more technical, I'm pretty sure that Cayden has better "tools" in all 5 categories. I do have to give Barney credit for leadership, grit and clutch hitting.
I agree... enjoy watching this entire group of Beavers, so many special players on that roster right now!

Caden and Nick have played on much friendlier surfaces, home and away, than DBar... and in my opinion the under-rated/forgotten/first 'wizard' with the glove and throw, and best glove arm combo in 2B Chris Kunda. Chris was consider inferior at the plate, but not as bad as some seem to think... .263 with 87 RBI for his 4 years ... PO 371 A 506 E 29 0.970 (Nick... 184 373 10 0.982). Not huge disparity considering over 300 more chances, and not only OSU's field improvements, but also those of other teams/ 8 games per year at Surprise vs at UP or... And, a bit better than Caden's...307 389 23 0.968... .279 BA with crazy range at 2B. Not as complete as either Nick and Caden, but great glove/arm combo belongs in the conversation. His stick was never going to allow him to be anything but a part timer in MILB... but was a great OSU middle infielder.

rilesinnewberg ... memory buster for me... do you have the answer??? Very, very good CF for the Beavs... Hawaiian? Thompson? killed by collision in OF? I remember the Halbrook kid was hurt in practice, later died in a coma... that was 1982ish. Wasn't there another or am I crossing wires here???

One thing I’ve learned from this conversation:
There are at least 4 ways to spell CADYN.
I happen to think he IS the best OSU SS of all time...but I’m beginning to think that I might be WRONG, because (after 3 seasons) many of the most ardent Beaver BB fans don’t even know how to spell his name !

Is Steve Lyons a candidate for this thread? If so, he gets my vote. I was thinking we probably would have to go back pre 2000 too. Steve would be right in the convo Best Steve Lyons nickname: Moon Man or Psycho? Steve Lyons was a center fielder his freshman season. He was moved to shortstop his sophomore year and was not known for his glove (.901 fielding percentage). He was never much of a hitter for Oregon State. He hit .234 his freshman year, .256 his sophomore year, and .250 his junior year. He primarily was known for his ability to work the count and get on base and then steal once he was there. At the time, college players could play semipro in the off-season. Rather than his play at Oregon State, Lyons was more well known for his .377 BA, 20 HRs, 34 SBs, and 72 RBIs that he amassed at a Dodge City semipro club between his sophomore and junior seasons. It was his play at Dodge City that caught the Red Sox' eye. Lyons was taken 19th overall in the 1981 draft. In his nine-year major league career, Lyons hit .252 with 19 home runs. Lyons was primarily known for his speed and versatility. He is one of the few players to have played all nine positions, playing all nine in one Spring Training game in 1990. His controversial statements as a broadcaster and domestic abuse arrest really sully my opinion of him.
