ESPN put out its ranking of Top 20 recruiting classes (for players enrolling in Sept. 2018).... Just a few quick comments... Beavs are not listed among the Top 20... Only 2 teams from Pac-12 crashed the Top 20 - - Stanford and Arizona. Stanford because they landed the Hull twins, of whom Lexie is the best h.s. player I've seen in the past 5 years...If you haven't seen her she does everything superbly. Everything. A can't miss Pac-12 star. Arizona cracked the Top 20 on the basis of a very good class with 5 signees (the amount of players does seem to weigh into ESPN's evaluations). Texas and Baylor are in top 3 nationally. This is a statement about the number of top quality players in Texas and these two signed the cream of the Texas crop. (At this time next year they will be sorry they missed out on Taylor Jones!). No Oregon in the Top 20.... I think that the Beavs not cracking the Top 20 reflects talent evaluators downgrading both AA & PM as top flight prospects. My guess is that their failure to dominate regionally hurt their rankings. At any rate, here is some recruiting info for those of you who follow this phase of the game... www.espn.com/high-school/girls-basketball/recruiting/class-rankings?class=2018

PM was never regarded a high level recruit, although I know SR and KB will turn her into a top level player. AA’s drop was due to the way she was played at Ribet. JS is probably much better than rated by Hoopgurlz

Oregon never seems to rank very high in class recruiting - except maybe for that Magnificent Seven a few years ago, now down to 4 still there. I don't know that foreign players are given much weight in the rankings. Are transfers considered? Seems like Slocum and Boley, along with Simmons and the Sabally sister would put them in the top 20.
Go Ducks and Beavs!

Why would Destiny Slocum help uo's recruiting rankings?

AA didn't drop. She had a 98 rating before. She still has a 98 rating. It's just that over the past year the ONE MAN who makes this list upgraded a bunch of other girls to 98. And since the ONE MAN who makes this list doesn't seem to get to the West very much, he hasn't re-evaluated AA (or PM) at all. This is one man's list. That's it. He rarely sees a particular girl more than a couple times, and he fills in by picking up "buzz" from other people in the community. He almost never evaluates foreign players. (Satou was a 90 - which is where he parks every girl that he knows is being recruited hard but he hasn't seen - until his very last list for that class. Note that JS is also a 90, and has one observation in the database from 1/17.)
He has seen PM exactly once (6/17).
I don't know where he's based, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was Texas. It certainly isn't in the West.

Why would Destiny Slocum help uo's recruiting rankings? I meant that she and Boley should help move both schools into the top20 rankings. And same with Simmons and Sabally. Sorry, not very clear.

bennyskid - -I'm not a big defender of those who make their living providing rankings and evaluations of high school athletes.... They say more than they know..leave out more than they include. Obviously, whoever compiles a list of say, the "Top 60 girl basketball players in America" is gonna struggle, big time...That's pretty much a given.. It's also pretty much a given that the "compiler" is NOT going to travel the length and breadth of the entire nation 10-20 times every season to make sure he sees every kid in action 2 or 3 times.... So, yeah, I get it. Olson relies on friends and buddies to fill him in.... I really doubt if his failure to take in games at Ribet this year influenced his judgment about the Beavers' incoming class.... He most likely made a few LA phone calls, heard that AA was not tearing up the league, was not making all star teams, and was not leading her team to championships - so he cooled on her as a significant talent.. He's not alone on that one... At any rate, here's some info on him - providing by he himself !! www.girlsbasketballreport.com/olsonbio.cfm

I slowed down a couple cases where AA attacked the basket so that people could better appreciate her fundamental skills. She knows how to put the ball on the floor one time and then rely on her long stride to get to the hoop. That kind of move is hard to defend. The slowed-down commentary is also amusing. AA Slomo 1AA Slomo 2

I've found Mr Olsen inconsistent at best. He does rely on his network for the information and ranks players lower if he doesn't see them personally. You would think ESPN would have a matrix of data coming from more than one source but alas no! So i agree with bennyskid - this is one man's list. Unfortunately it isn't as comprehensive as it should be but thankful that he does a good enough job to give a good reference point.
