When was the last time we didn't have the Sunday starter figured out in week one? I'm not liking this.
Based upon our pitching so far, we do not deserve the high preseason ranking we were given. I hope this trend doesn't continue.

Jmho, but pitching will be just fine. Eckert will pitch at least as well as last season. Heimlich is bigger and stronger and will be just fine. Thompson will bounce back at some point. Martinek will be in the mix when he is off suspension, and Hickey will add quality innings in relief which will help with a short starter outing. Whichever guy drops out of the 4 man starter rotation will be an excellent long reliever, and the young guys who have had too much adrenaline in their relief appearances so far will find the plate very soon. Yesterday, Thompson would have been out of his bad innings sooner without the shaky, early infield play. Nate was chewing rear on a couple of infielders more than he was chewing on Thompson on his mound trips.
Pitching has been the concern voiced in the newspaper articles, but the potential is present. Ulcers for us old farts may manifest themselves until the staff shakes out.

Ulcers for us old farts may manifest themselves until the staff shakes out. Does turning 60 two weeks ago officially qualify me as an "old fart"? Do you think we will see Eckert today? How much did the infield play hurt us yesterday, in the early part of the game when Thompson was pitching? I couldn't find a radio station driving home from PDX yesterday until late in the 3rd inning.

My uninformed guess would be Heimlich for today simply because Casey will try to get a lefty ready for the regular rotation. On the other hand, the starter will need to eat innings today because of some previous use of relievers, and Eckert can eat innings. So I know squat. Lol.
As far as Jake, the errors and mental lapses in the infield took place at key times which really killed a struggling starter. Got to give Utah Valley credit as they fouled off a ton of good pitches, and would then just go opposite field with a tough pitch and find a hole.

To add to the intrigue on the starter, Heimlich and Eckert were the two pitchers out early in the bullpen doing identical drills. Of course, Crazy Max was out there stretching. Max was out there in the 3rd inning yesterday, and I suspect that he was begging for an early appearance. Guy is fun to watch.

Eckert seriously long tossing. Luke still stretching. Eckert will be the guy. And just announced.
