That should move us up two spots in the polls tomorrow morning. And according to D1 Baseball they did just that....now #3 in the nation - amazing considering the problems that are apparent week to week. PAC-12 has 3 of the top 7. It's going to be one heck of a league season finish! d1baseball.com/rankings/d1baseball-top-25-rankings-may-1/

I'm just going to say it out loud. This Top 10 ranking is reputation only. Respect for Pat Casey & OS program. Seriously watching the blunders this weekend we are not Top 10. I'd say 15-20 at best. Based on play in the field we don't deserve a National seed. The record is gaudy. Baseball America brings up a note that we have not played a Top 25 team this year.
Maybe I'm spoiled by 56-6 last year where the pitching was astounding. The play in the field was solid. And the late inning come backs were out of this world. Maybe I'm comparing this years team to last year CWS performance. Our play in the field & pitching needs help in a hurry or we will be 2 & BBQ

The hallmark of Oregon State baseball under Pat Casey for over a decade has been the fact that they don't make the little mistakes that 99% of other college baseball teams make. The kinds of blunders OSU made this weekend weren't out of line with other top 10 teams.

Our play in the field & pitching needs help in a hurry or we will be 2 & BBQ Maybe they are not a top 10 team currently, but the potential is there and either way, it's good for the program to be ranked this high. I know this is college baseball we're talking about, but the top 10-15 rankings in college football are always based on reputation, especially pre-season. We have one of the best records in college baseball, and despite looking shaky at times, we're still winning games. Hard to move a team down for winning series. The note about OSU not playing a top 25 team is interesting, but it just seems like a stat that only the SEC gets to take advantage of. They dominate the polls, so of course, they'll have more chances to play top 25 teams. Also, Stanford gets to take credit for sweeping Cal St Fullerton earlier in the season when they were in the top 25. Fullerton proceeded to lose more games and dropped out right before OSU played them and won 2 out of 3. Fullerton is just on the outside of the polls now after playing a brutal non-conference, but even if they break into the top 25, that stat won't show up for OSU. Whether we're in the top 10 based on play or reputation, it's important to stay ranked high for the national seeds. We need home field advantage for the regionals and super regionals. It's just nice to see an OSU program earn respect in the polls.

Wasn't our little trip to Missouri to beat up on a top 25 team? Face it, we are two pitchers settling down away from being close to what we were last year. We have a better offense, similar defense, and again, you can only play who is on your schedule. Go Beavs!

BUT, in no way shape or form are we anywhere close to last season or the season before or... as far as pitching is concerned. "Settling down" is not the issue in the comparison. The guys outside Luke, Jake, and the underutilized Pierce are not near the quality... period. OSU is 39 games into the season, we have ONE consistent starter regardless of what the stats may say vs a inferior SOS. We are basically a "proven staff" away from being a top 16 threat in the postseason. Fehmel should be better in this his 3rd year. The rest are basically still learning on the job, 1st year guys who have not handled their roles or responsibilities very well... at least not on any type of consistent basis. Can certain guys "show up" and have a great outing? Sure... just like any D1 pitcher could. But, these guys are not what OSU pitching staffs have resembled in the past 10-12 years. Unfortunately it happens in a year where we have a really good offensive lineup. But, as we've learned in the postseason... pitching generally determines your fate. What you hope for now, is that we get some positive innings from multiple guys the next few weeks and we utilize bodies on the mound much better than we have. Other than Luke's starts, and Jake closing right now it seems OSU might be better off to toss out the "book". Piecing together multiple pitchers for shorter stints might be the way to go. Most of these guys are capable of going 2-3+ innings on multiple days in a weekend series. My only disappointment this season (yes... I know I'm NOT PC or the former PCOY Nate) is that the coaches have not been flexible. OSU has depended on the "workhorse" pitching methodology... stud starters that carry a team thru most weekend series, with relievers being a minor role player. This staff is not, was never going to be that coming into this season. And, it was fairly easy to spot early on in Surprise. Each and every pitcher has had some very bright moments, and almost all have been decimated by a late 'hook'. We've had so many opportunities for pitchers to have 1-3 innings of stellar work, only to be left in for that one horrific inning when we've had plenty of good arms needing the development. At this point you can see some guys are just full of self doubt when any thing goes awry on the hill. For me, the development of this staff the rest of this season, with some real positive shorter outings is the key to not only this post season, but next years success where we basically start at ground zero offensively.

Starter Development takes mound time. Sometime you let guys burn in (and fail) to let them find their backbone. I think Gambrell is a year away from being an all american. He is just not mentally tough yet. Constantly being up in the count and then walking guys is exactly what Jake Thompson and other guys did before they matured as pitchers. If Thompson was back this year it would be the same starting rotation right? The difference between Thompson and Gambrell is just one guy but its a HUGE difference.

If Thompson was back this year it would be the same starting rotation right? The difference between Thompson and Gambrell is just one guy but its a HUGE difference. True in some respects... but there is a difference... mound time doesn't equal developing a starter. Grant seems to be the next best option, yet you can actually see when he begins to struggle physically. He (and others) are throwers... not yet pitchers... (game) mound time doesn't necessarily ever solve that. Pitchers have more than just raw arm talent... they have the physical ability to locate without "trying"... they are so mechanically sound they are able to focus on the other aspects of pitching, not mechanics. At this point we have too many guys on this staff with questionable/inconsistent mechanics, hence throwers that are highly inconsistent in their confidence to locate... and don't. In any case, my point being... we do not have two other true quality starters, and the handling of the innings has been suspect and in some cases has been a liability to the development of some arms. Coaches can't just demand mental toughness... doesn't work that way. Now you can eventually replace guys with "tougher" players, but during the season you are what you are and have to put pitchers in situations to succeed and should know their limits. Just think we've been a little too "reactive" as a coaching staff, vs being proactive and using multiple arms in some games. There is nothing wrong with giving teams multiple looks during a game when you don't have a guy(s) that are workhorses.

The mechanics are being worked on - it's not like they aren't being coached - things have to click. It's really hard to replace Jake Thompson with a freshman or soph with little game experience because we did have an incredible starting three last year - but this is what the team faces, and regardless of how much bullpen you get midweek, until you can translate it onto the mound on the weekend, it's going to be a shaky ride. But I would rather have a shaky ride 31-7 record than something worse.

(North Carolina replaced NC State in the top 4 with a series win over the Wolfpack.) #3 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, passing NC State and Texas Tech. #3 in Perfect Game, passing NC State and Texas Tech. Stanford is ranked #1 at Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, #2 at Baseball America, #2 in USA Today Coaches Poll, #2 in Pefect Game, and #2 in D1Baseball. The Beavers aren't winning pretty, but they are winning. Oregon State's 32-7 record is the third best in Division 1 behind Tennessee Tech's 37-6 record and Stanford's 33-6 record. And say what you want about the quality of opponent, but the Beavers are playing a higher class of competition than the Southern Illinoises and Southeast Missouris of the of world, like Tennessee Tech. As an aside, the Cardinal have been playing out-of-their-minds, 33-6 start against the #21 overall schedule. Compare that against Oregon State's 32-7 start against the #101 overall schedule. The Cardinal are monsters this year for the first time in at least a decade. The Oregon State-Stanford tilt next weekend is going to be huge. The Beavers need to stay focused though and sweep the five road games between now and when the Cardinal come to town.
