Lose out on a generational athlete, especially when your 2 schools are already nationally prominent, would be a huge setback for the state.and the programs' future Not really. Most women, when offered by Stanford, choose Stanford, no matter the circumstances. We are never going to win many recruiting wars with Stanford, at least as long as Tara is there. Let's see, the number 121st ranked university or the three ranked university IN THE WORLD. The women seem to have more brains where it comes to these kinds of choices. It'll be Stanford.

Well, maybe "huge setback" was a little strong; but off-the-court speaking, perhaps a slap in the face considering what the national perception of the 2 schools would now be. Good points about Stanford, though, but am still thrilled the Card haven't won the pac12 in several years.

They have to have more brains because they are not going to make millions but just going to a basketball school and then turning pro. They are going to need to rely on their education more. The WNBA does not give players $10 million a year just for being 7' and sucking.....I'm looking at you Meyers Leonard.

This is true, however the reasons for players wanting scholarships has gradually undergone a change over the years. The actual value of a college degree has been diminishing, while the opportunities for women having a professional career after their college a playing days are over has increased. it is true that the top players do not command contracts that are in the millions like in the NBA, however top players still can pull down salaries in the hundreds of thousands playing in the WNBA and over seas . Even the second tier players make more than an entry level graduate could ever hope to make. So more players are picking colleges based on their future in basketball as opposed to just getting a degree that guarantees very little in today's job market. There are more degree's than available positions for them to fill. The advantage that a school with a basketball rep used to have in respect to drawing recruits gets less with passing time. There are more competent coaches now than there were when these programs first became established. Now it is true that a degree from Stanford still carries a lot of clout in the job market, but still for someone who has a future in basketball not so much. Since Chiney and Naneka Stanford has not had much success in developing players for the next level and recruits often look at that as a criteria for picking a school. Even the attraction of Uconn in that respect is losing it's luster. Players are not always willing to put up with the type of personality that Tara and Geno possess. Right or wrong players sometimes prefer coaches like SR who is successful while also being congenial. Many people see programs like Oregon and Oregon St as being the up and coming programs that will challenge Uconn in the West. You can add ND, South C, louisville, Miss st and other programs in the east. In fact Uconns 2018 recruiting class was based more on the vacancy the team had at certain positions than the actual draw of Geno or the program. Stanford has not dominated the Pac 12 in years and Uconn is also on the way down. Other programs need to recognize that they can compete with those schools for recruits. All other things being equal a degree from Stanford can be the tie breaker. Oregon St, however, can still compete with Stanford for recruits depending on the players individual priorities. Players want different things. Tara is not heads and shoulders above the rest of the coaches in the Pac 12 as she was in the past. She has her weaknesses as does the lure of Stanford as well.

[ Despite our success, we are no where close to challenging UCONN. And even if we produce girls that can make 6 figures professionally, it is still not even close to NBA money and they will still need another career to fall back on. The average women’s professional career is short and they’re not going to make enough to retire in that short of a career. The degree is still going to matter more in the women’s game.

"The actual value of a college degree has been diminishing" No, it has not. It is one of the major reasons for income disparity in this country. A BA/BS will give you an extra million dollars over your life.

The trend may be changing. Mik was strongly recruited by TV and here she is. Taylor Jones chose to be a beaver. The schmucks have had some success as well.
