How soon we forget, Kone was an average 3 star recruit coming out of high school. He was solid pick up, but not one of the higher ranked recruits under Tinkle. Sad to see him go. This coming year was a big opportunity for him. Now the coaching staff has an opportunity to find a better fit. That 3 star ranking was slightly surprising, given that he was the Bay Area POY (I believe) as a junior and had good size. That horrible injury that derailed his senior season was really a blow, but he had game. His potential impact here just never materialized. In fairness to the kid, the frustration of not being able to perform at the level he expected, combined with a lack of playing time and a lack of any real success as a team during his stay likely played a big part in the attitude that people around the program saw this year. I watched him appear to get quite frustrated in warmups during one of the later pre-conference games. He tried over and over to throw down a dunk and kept getting rim checked. I always had the impression that his legs were never what they had once been. I can imagine it would be very frustrating not to be able to do the things on the court that you once could.

The weird thing (to me at least) when it came to Kone is he looks so absolutely out of sorts and awkward with the ball in his hand that it was hard for me to fathom that he averaged something like 25 pts/gm his senior year in high school before he got hurt - and in a pretty competitive league IIRC.
Hopefully he heals up and has some success wherever he ends up...

I believe I saw the same thing. At the time I was thinking it happened to him at 19 instead of 29 like the rest of us and instead of being high enough to be rim-checked we could only graze the bottom of the rim.

Bad player on a bad team. This is a win win. Hopefully he moves on to have success and we can use this roster spot for someone who doesn't suck at this level.

I thought Ben brought a physical element to the game that gave the beavs a lift. He came in a few times and muscled his way to rebounds that nobody else on the team was going to get. Sure his game (and playing time) was limited but it isn't as if he was a total bust when he was in there. Dude is powerful and clearly has a good motor.

I think Ben will do just fine if he fully recovers from the knee and he finds playing time wherever he ends up. So much of good basketball is about good postioning and Ben seems to understand that. If he can ge his hops back on top of his positioning he could be fairly dominant as a rebounder and defender, the offense would come along as well.

I think that is a really unkind thing to say about Ben - he was a good player that suffered a serious injury and was only starting to get back into any kind of playing form. I never questioned his ability or his effort and to say that he was a bad player is a failure to recognize talent and determination thwarted by fate. I wish him nothing but the best going forward, and thank him for being a Beaver.

I'm thinking he was referring back to the "bad player on a bad team" comment eel guy said. Depending on how many quotes are in a post the early ones can drop off and context is lost.

Bad player on a bad team. This is a win win. Ignorance must be your forte. I guess you have to hang your hat on something. Yeah, it's called fact based reality. You're always welcome to join the club. We just freed up a roster spot for someone else. Best wishes to him.

I liked Kone and wish it would have worked out better for him at OSU. It was tough to see his frustration at times not being able to do the things he was used to doing on the court. I was fortunate to make it into my 40’s before suffering an injury that truly affected my ability to play basketball. Not that it was ever that great anyways.
