I have to admit I didn't follow E. Westbrook's season, but I must say I was expecting her to be more of a factor in our game given her lofty rankings and likely motivation against her former classmate and other Oregonians. Tuning into the Vol BB and it is all crappy coaching that holds back the players..... Thoughts? Westbrook was right up there with SI in terms of her rankings, but SI (I can't believe I am saying something positive about the 'ucks) is a huge factor comparatively speaking, and was even as a true frosh.
Perhaps this is another case of stars and rankings not being a great predictor of future success, both a cautionary tale and good news for us as we debate JS, AA, PM, ......
Go Beavers!

Judging only from what I saw on Sunday, I don’t think she’s being well-coached at Tennessee.

She is on a team with a couple of very high quality senior players and more than a few mcd all americans. It might have been a tougher transition than she expected. We will know more next year.
I was hoping that she would sign with us last year until she put on her "look at me" signing party the second day of signing so she would have all attention. Put on an hour plus video showing how great she is. I knew then that we didn't want her.
Sounds a bit like the I I I I player south of here.

2ndGen - - Westbrook is a talent. I don't know anyone who knows the games who says otherwise. She's obviously not a super-star as yet - not even on her own team. But I think she will eventually be an All-SEC player if she stays at Tennessee.
It's pretty tough (and a bit unfair) to assess talent in a one game playoff setting - especially when the player's team is getting beat and getting out played... At any rate, I personally believe that Westbrook has all the ingredients to be a difference maker on a top level team...
I very much doubt she is "another case of stars and rankings not being a great predictor of future success..." For one thing, in EW's case, her future has not yet arrived. She just completed her rookie year. I wish she signed with the Beavs, but the fact she signed with Tennessee does not make her any less the talent that Coach R and others in the program have openly admitted she is.... GO BEAVS !!

I know someone who is friends with her family. She is a very sweet gal who has her reasons for wanting to be on the other side of the country.

411500 - you make good points, and you are quite right that it is unfair to assess a player based on one game. Clearly one does not get the lofty ratings and rankings from being a slouch. My poorly worded posting aside, I still was surprised that she was not more of a factor in the game, *given* her talent and seeming motivation to do well in the game. And the Vols bulletin board seemed to think very poorly in general of their coach, so I was wondering if that was a factor. I should have left it at that. Go Beavers!

If you followed any WCBBs site you would realize that Holly Warwick is considered by most to be possibly the worst coach in WCBB. She was a Pat Summit player then Asst. coach who inherited the program via Pats recommendation. Now I don't believe she is really as bad as the WCBB nations makes her out to be, but she certainly isn't a very good coach. So the idea that Westbrook or any other player has their development hindered is not that out in left field. She has hung on this long because she is close friends with the Tenn AD but she only has one more year on her contract and it appears her time is running out. All the support she had from the Tenn fans seems to have finally eroded. Most of that support was generally because she was Summits choice and the vol fans all worshiped Summit.

Is the comparison: Miller=Summit Anderson=Holly

Not quite. Holly didn't even have the initial success that Andersen had. Holly took over coaching while Summit was still the coach on record. Remember Summit was suffering from Alzheimers. The program sort of already was in decline. Where as when Anderson took over it was at it's peak. Of course having Gary Payton sure helped.

From the looks of the her stats and the game against Oregon State. It appears that Westbrook's limited 3 point shooting affected her ability to contribute and her desirability as a recruit to Rueck. The Rueck part is complete speculation, but we do know he likes to have a lot of players that can shoot the 3. Westbrook was not horrible in 3 point shooting all season long, but at 33.3% she would have been the worst on our team unless you count Maddie Washington's 1 for 5 on the season or the other 2 players at 0 for 1.

SR recruited Evina diligently, despite Evina making clear early on that she wanted to get the h*** out of Oregon. Per Evina.

I never intended to imply that. I had the impression that at some point he backed off some. No real science there. If the staff did back off some on the recruiting then it probably had more to do with not being in the final cut of teams. Her long range shooting is only of medium desirability right now, though.

We have kids on our football team who just did the same thing in February, except they chose us. We also don't know to what extent parents/coaches/others are behind it all vs the kid (look at the Ball family). Who cares, it's a party for an 18 yr old high school girl. If she would have put on an orange and black hat I bet everyone would have gotten over it pretty dang quick.

Perhaps true in football, though I don't recall our signees waiting a day or two beyond signing day to sign for maximal fawning media coverage, holding a skills/video exhbition, etc. etc. I am not saying that there is anything wrong with that approach, life is short, make it memorable.......just depends on what it takes for an event to be memorable to a person...... In the realm of WBB, I think it will continue to be rare to see those kinds of recruits signing with us. We might continue to be in the mix for them, however, as the program continues to grow in stature. For example, the 6th ranked recruit in the country just signed with us, and she did so on signing day, with minimal fanfare, no array of hats - and note she picked us almost a year prior and remained steadfast in her commitment. Go Beavers!
