6 part documentary just released on Netflix on the Rajneeshees called Wild Wild Country. Directed by the same duo who did The Battered Bastards of Baseball.
I'm 3 episodes in and it's even crazier than I remembered, but a fun trip down memory lane. I still remember the paranoia (I was in middle school) and the teasing you got at school if you wore red LOL.

I had finished my enlistment in the Marine Corps when the whole situation heated up. I was thinking "oh boy, the s%#t's about to get real" when the Rajneeshees showed they had fully automatic weapons after an Islamic group bombed their Portland hotel.

Wild times in Central Oregon. Name of Antelope was never officially changed to Rajneesh due to the Postal Service. Some manager in Portland knew someone who knew someone and got the Post Office building fast tracked to the National Historical Register. In normal times it probably would not have happened but it pretty much stuck the renaming thing up the Bhagwan's and Sheila's asses.

I read this comment then watched in the last episode for the PO Office. It's a trailer! So the (nice ish) trailer is a Historical site? I assume they are going to have upkeep & maintainence on it. That might be problematic

Was a building. When the Rajneeshees left, the Historical designation did as well. Just a way to puck with them and protect the town name.

Speaking of post offices in trailers, decades ago the old Eddyville post office burnt. They moved in a trailer. Since the trailer couldn't be "secured", the Postmaster had to take what little stamp stock and cash he had, box it up, and send it registered mail to himself. It went through the registry cage in Salem every night and back out to him. Just one thing you looked for every night. Have no idea what they have now.

Crazy time. Erstwhile nice, intelligent people selling their souls (and every damn thing else) to follow a “spiritual leader “ that cobbled together several “faiths” into one (PROSPEROUS biness), and they bought it. Looking for something to fill a void, I reckon. They were duped.

It was really cool to see all of the old broadcasters. A trip down memory lane.
The overarching arrogance ( name calling, belittling,etc..) of the Rajneeshees is mind blowing to me. It is pretty incredible they don't seem to think they did anything wrong.
The busing in of vagrants just to swing elections sure hits a note in today's debates on registering to vote.

I wonder how different things would have been if the ranch wasn't next to the Bowerman family ranch. And the Bowerman's just happen to be old family friends of the Frohnmayers, with Dave Frohnmayer as Attorney General. Bill Bowerman makes some calls and the U.S. Attorney and State of Oregon are all over this, much quicker than if there were a bunch of no name families owning property out there. It was pretty clear the government was going to find reasons to remove the leadership and watch the commune implode. I'm no fan of the cult, and their arrogance was appalling, but it wasn't the proudest moment for the U.S. government either. Thankfully Sheela and her gang were dumb enough to escalate things and doom themselves.
Why does everyone over 50 look so old in the 1980's? I also miss some really good TV reporters back then, like Jon Tuttle at KGW, middle-aged professionals with a lot of experience, now the local stations send kids out to be their roving reporters, all about saving money, not quality journalism.
