The Boston Red Sox are beginning to think they may have stolen one when they drafted Jake Thompson in the 4th round last June. In college, Jake relied on a two-seam, sinking fastball and a hard slider to post his 14-1 record last season. Last fall Jake was agreeable to moving on the seams and throwing a 4-seam fastball which the Sox organization prefers. Jake began to fill up the zone with his 4-seamer that had a late run in on RH hitters and up to 96 mph.
To their surprise, Jake also told them he can throw the curve ball and change, but rarely had those pitches called at Oregon State. After a stint on the mound, he showed them he can indeed spin the breaking pitch and showed them a good change-up as well.
The minor league pitching instructors were shocked. The added mix moves Jake from the middle relief-possible starter category into the starter box. He will throw 4 pitches this year and is ticketed for Greenville Drive in the South Atlantic League (Sally) in Greenville, S.C. The Sally is long-season, Low-A
Jake is ranked the #16 prospect in the Red Sox organization.

14-1 on two pitches, had they let him throw all 4, who knows how many games he would have won. Go Jake do us beavers proud!
