Here's my grade: W W W W W W W W W W W W W L W W Seems to me people on this board won't be happy until we smoke every team 20 to nuthin, and then even still they would probably wringe their hands about how we need to fix some things or St. Mary's school for the deaf and blind will roll us next week. This team wins pretty and this team wins ugly... but the most important thing is that they win. I think the only reason we are sweating our pitching is because we had an otherworldly performance last season... but our current 2.69 ain't exactly garbage, and that is a result of a couple sub-par outings. We won two national championships with a season ERA of 2.36 and 2.43 It isn't like we are in some other galaxy of pitching or anything. We need to get some consistency down, but lets be honest with ourselves. we are Friday to Sunday better than the vast majority of teams in the nation. rocky games are going to happen. 15-1 in the first quarter is what matters. I think what makes me nervous is the strength of the opponents. B1G was ok. CSF was good and will probably make the playoffs. I was impressed with their relievers Sunday. Struggling vs Hartford was a bit concerning Pac 12 top of the conference will test us.

Not true. OSU won two national championships with a season ERA of 3.41 and 3.48 in 2006 and 2007, respectively.

A couple of other observations. First, Grenier was moving better on Sunday than he has in several games. I am hoping he is getting healthy and it wasn't the meds. He was in obvious discomfort by the end of Saturday's game. Adley is looking better game by game as far as the shoulder.
Finally, there must be something in the water down in Elk Grove. Madrigal is as good as it gets in college ball. However, that tiny 2B for Fullerton was pretty special. Big time power. Another Elk Grove product. Different high school. Same 10 and under Little League World Series team. Opposing coaches in LL must have told pitchers just to walk the 2 little guys.
Finally, Nate's reliever moves were dead on the money. Years ago, I didn't like Yeskie. He has proven me to be so wrong. JMHO.

There are a couple of things you didn't grade. One was the coaching. Was I the only one pulling out my hair when we are leading 5-1 and our pitcher is walking a batter per inning. He should of been pulled when he walked the first batter in the 5th. Then to leave him after he walked back to batters was crazy. So the 3rd batter gets HBP and the bases are loaded. Soon it is 5-4 and we are holding on by the skin of our teeth. Who makes the decisions on our pitching changes? Anyways we pulled it out despite some poor managerial decisions. The other thing I would like to see Jones get some playing time. I think we have a solid player that we don't utilize. It would've been hard to pull him earlier since Chamberlin wasn't ready. Gambrell was doing fine until the 5th, so they did not have activity in the bullpen prior to that.

Again that is poor coaching. With Gambrell's wildness throughout the game we should have had someone throwing in the bullpen ready to come in if he didn't regain his control. Throwing to 1st; meetings on the mound; extra time between pitches; asking for a new ball; pitching coach talking to pitcher. There are a lot of "stalling" tactics that can be utilized, but someone should have been loose and warmed up. How many runners did Fullerton leave on the bases?I think PC would of have that situation covered.

Gambrell had walked only two batters in the previous three innings. You don't get a reliever up and get him ready, only to have him sit back down, for no reason. There was no need to have anyone ready heading into the fifth. When the need arose, Chamberlin was ready quickly.
Yeskie is a two-time national pitching coach of the year. I'm confident in his decisions.

Using the words "poor coaching" with Pat Casey and Nate Yeskie is not something that I highly recommend doing. This may be a bit of a stunner to some, but Casey thinks about the whole season, and the post season, not just the game at hand. If you see a guy being left in, there is a reason for it. They are giving him a shot to work himself out of trouble, to face adversity and overcome it. That is the sort of thing you do in the first quarter of so of the season. And the sort of thing you do on the Tuesday game of the week. It is not something you are going to see too much of in league play and in the next couple weeks. You do it while you have the opportunity to do it. I am not trying to say Casey doesn't care about winning every game... I am trying to say he knows when he has opportunity to work some kids, and when he has to play it close. It is a marathon not a sprint. Lets not pretend like a 2 time national championship winning coach, and pitching coach that has produced 9 all Americans and 28 drafted pitchers needs to be reminded of the basics of being a coach...

It is just my opinion, but Gretler is the MVP of this Team for the past year plus. He is very consistent. He might have only had a .305 average last year, but he seemed to always have the hit that sparked a rally and never really went in a slump at all! Mr. Consistent! I'm a Gretler fan... seems to work hard and be a heady player. Keep in mind he committed 2 errors on Friday and a mental error on Sunday when he didn't tag the runner advancing from 2b to third with one out. He got the out at first to make it 2 down... but a single by the next guy would have scored him. Lucky for us and Michael we made the 3rd out. But those little things could bite us if we don't get them cleaned up. I'm very grateful to Gretler in returning for his Senior year. Now, if you want to stir the pot...start counting how many dudes we will need to replace next year. Scary. So, enjoy this now.... the future holds no guarantees.

The runner from 2nd got a good jump and Gretler had to come way off the line and in to field the ball. Grenier was not going to get to 3rd to cover in time, so Michael would have had to race the runner to the bag. He probably would have gotten him, but it was no sure thing with his momentum taking him toward 2nd base. If he tried that play and missed him, they have 1st and 3rd with 1 out. I like that he took the easy out in that situation.
