From what I've seen we need to step it up at least a couple of notches. For Leaque Play, LH has to step his game now. BF can do the job if we come up with the right combo to follow BF after 5 or 6 Innings. Gambrell is the real question mark in my mind. Could be the Ace if can focus and keep the Ball Down. Might as well mention the Defense is not up to last years standards and our DH mjust stop taking 3 rd Strikes! There I fixed everything! LOL
Cal's Hitting Stats are enough to drive up our ERA's without one pitch.

And, any errors this weekend can be blamed on Cal's HS level facility PS- it really is

Our pitching worries me as well, 8 walks and we manage to win now, but we will lose 9 out of 10 times. Hope we can take this week and settle down and get focused.

My take: Andy Armstrong showed that he can play. Defense has been decent, but Andy had agressive swings. Definitely a positive from the weekend. He keeps improving with the bat, and he may be the DH against righties. There is a need.
Even though Fullerton has a terrible record, they are light years above the previous competition this season. Taking 2 of 3 is a positive especially without Madrigal.
The positive on Gambrell is that he was missing close to the plate. He has good stuff, but last season his misses were up and over the plate. Definite improvement in that area.
Imho, Luke was fine. The errors hurt, and Fullerton takes advantage of extra outs. They also have enough speed and smarts to really take advantage of any slight miscue. Fullerton could definitely use one of the Beaver lefties on the mound though.
Overall, a positive weekend. ThE Beavers played a lot better even with the loss than they had in the previous 5 games against Hartford and Portland.

The bats were so hot to start the season that the rest of the regular season seemed like a formality. Nick got hurt, we came back to cooler weather and we are getting everyone's best shot. Over the course of the season, the adversity we are facing now will help the team. Lots of positives in the first 1/3 of the season. Just need to keep working hard, and improving.

Getting Madrigal back would help too. [ I love that people are concerned when we are 15-1. Can we please have the same problem in basketball or football please! And now D1 BB has us at #1 (concern...concern). What I’m most excited about this season is watching the pitchers that Casey & co. seem to come up with year in and year out, that immediately establish their importance to the team. Everyone knew about Abel, but having two guys like Pierce and Chamberlain step in, against big time competition, is just plain fun. Their composure and grit is off the charts, given their inexperience at this level of BB. Also have enjoyed Michael Gretler develop as a hitter. In Sundays game Kevin Stocker harkened back to Gretlers (F) year (when he was pressed into duty by injury to T Mo(?). Stocker noted he couldn’t get the ball out of the infield. So true, he was as sure an out/Rally-killer as I can recall in several years. Now he’s a burgeoning stud. What a great program!

It is just my opinion, but Gretler is the MVP of this Team for the past year plus. He is very consistent. He might have only had a .305 average last year, but he seemed to always have the hit that sparked a rally and never really went in a slump at all! Mr. Consistent!

Getting Madrigal back would help too. [ I love that people are concerned when we are 15-1. Can we please have the same problem in basketball or football please! I realize that in baseball our standard is not to simply deserve the post-season. We legitimately should be looking at a shot at Omaha most years and given that can discuss where we need to keep improving in order to increase our chances to win it all. The record is great, probably as good as or than better any of the other real contenders in America would have done with our schedule, but we are at a point with this program IMO that we should care about the little things and adjustments as much as the record. I will never take this success for granted (learned that from hoops in the 80’s), but with a championship in mind I know that we need to grow in some areas. Getting Madrigal back will quickly clean plenty of the concerns up considerably - he's that good. However, even the greatest players in the game can't literally carry a team at the level we are pursuing. Pitching, defense and offensive execution all need to progress in order for us to achieve the realistic goals that we have. We need to be thankful, and respectful, but it's OK to admit that we have to be better in April than we are now in several areas, and better still in May if we want to host a Super-regional, which is a major value if we're planning not to have to cancel our bookings at Omaha hotels in June.Not a third world problem, in fact this is a good "problem" to have to wrestle with.

Gretler may have more uspside than anyone if he ever grows into his body. Put 20 Pounds of muscle on that kid and you might have a real monster.
Now let me be really bold and Grade what I have seen soo far. Now watch the fur fly!
Outfield = B+ Infield = C+ Catching = C Pitching / Starters = C+ (Expect Much) BP Pitching = B (Improving)

Here's my grade: W W W W W W W W W W W W W L W W Seems to me people on this board won't be happy until we smoke every team 20 to nuthin, and then even still they would probably wringe their hands about how we need to fix some things or St. Mary's school for the deaf and blind will roll us next week. This team wins pretty and this team wins ugly... but the most important thing is that they win. I think the only reason we are sweating our pitching is because we had an otherworldly performance last season... but our current 2.69 ain't exactly garbage, and that is a result of a couple sub-par outings. We won two national championships with a season ERA of 2.36 and 2.43 It isn't like we are in some other galaxy of pitching or anything. We need to get some consistency down, but lets be honest with ourselves. we are Friday to Sunday better than the vast majority of teams in the nation. rocky games are going to happen. 15-1 in the first quarter is what matters.

There are a couple of things you didn't grade. One was the coaching. Was I the only one pulling out my hair when we are leading 5-1 and our pitcher is walking a batter per inning. He should of been pulled when he walked the first batter in the 5th. Then to leave him after he walked back to batters was crazy. So the 3rd batter gets HBP and the bases are loaded. Soon it is 5-4 and we are holding on by the skin of our teeth. Who makes the decisions on our pitching changes? Anyways we pulled it out despite some poor managerial decisions. The other thing I would like to see Jones get some playing time. I think we have a solid player that we don't utilize.
